Yes. But wait until an interesting color is released.
As for games worth getting a DS for -- there are tons. Most just aren't quite out yet.
Currently-available stuff includes Kirby, Meteos and maybe that Nanostray game.
Upcoming includes Lost In Blue, Another Code, that Sonic game, Phoneix Wright, Dawn of Sorrow, Trauma Unit, Katamari, and a whole bunch of stuff I'm forgetting offhand. |

Kirby makes it feel like 1985 again (in the best way possible, and if the NES is where you first started). New control scheme, new frustrations as you slowly learn how to rub and touch the controls to perform to your liking.
If Nanostray is anything like Iridion II, then there's another good buy. |

Yeah, the DS in general makes me feel like I did when the NES was new and things like Clu-Clu land and Gyromite were blowing my mind.
I liked what I played of Nanostray at E3. I'm probably going to interview Shin'en, too. When I get to it.
Toups can talk about it, I'm sure. |

| Meteos and Kirby definitely provide the strongest incentive yet for me to get a DS. I should probably just break down and buy one later this year, plus then I could get Gunstar and my own copy of Astro Boy. |

Right, so. Mario DS.
Why was this chosen as a launch title? As the launch title, really. People have told me that it was a showcase title, which makes sense, I guess, except that Nintendo was never trying to impress anyone with the DS's graphical horsepower -- the selling point of the DS is the touch screen and new types of interface.
And the thing with Mario DS is -- it will make you hate the touch screen. Unless you're some big-handed, long-thumbed freak like Shaper, there's no real practical way to play the game. It will make you wish you had an honest to God analog stick under your thumb -- hell, even that nub on the PSP would be better. You can find ways to play it, mind you, but it never begans to feel natural. And my wrist started to get sore after a week of playing it. Also, masturbation joke.
It perplexes me. Because the game seems really eager to teach you to use the touch screen, but does it in really backwards ways. Whenever you enter a painting, you can't press A like you usually would do to start the level; you have to touch the bottom screen. I guess just so that you are, you know, touching something, and you get used to the idea of touching the screen. But then there are menus where you'd expect to touch the screen but you need to use the directional pad instead. And if you choose to play the game with the touch screen (which you will, because it just flat out doesn't work with digital controls), you just start to get frustrated with how fickle the touch screen can be.
Every person I've known (save on these forums) who has bought a DS, bought it with Mario and returned it because they didn't like the interface and the PSP had better graphics. It just seems like a maneuver that backfired badly, is all.
On a positive note, it kind of demonstrates that 3D gaming doesn't really work well on the system, so maybe it will encourage developers to stick with 2D. |

You should totally get a DS,. they're fantastic! Also, I don't agree with Toups' account of Mario 64. I didn't experience any frustration control-wise (I used the D-pad + face buttons) buuut then again I've never played the game with an analogue thumbstick. So.
Also, you can check out my 1UP blog which I've just updated with a bunch of info about the DS, game impressions/links to decent reviews, hardware updates, rumours, so on. http://people.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5634265 |

Another Code: Two Memories is reason alone to buy a DS. It's a little short, but great fun, and the absolute perfect game to introduce you to what the DS is really trying to be.
It also has a great story, and some innovative, if not always taxing, puzzles.
Ashleigh should be the DS's mascot.
I've shown AC to my mother, and couldn't get the DS back off her for half an hour. She wants me to loan it to her so she can play it. She doesn't like games, normally. |

| Yeah, the incorporation of a DS-analog in the game is what made me make that kind of link. I do hope she becomes a sort-of mascot for the system, as she'd be quite different to other system/developer mascots out there. |

Yes Another Code is all that, at least for the 5 hours play time I got from it.
Buy a DS so you can never return to your washed out, dull, more comfortable SP. |

Feel the Magic
Kirby's Canvas Curse
Meteos
This is the current list of games that should keep you entertained and show off what the DS is as a system.
Feel the Magic is what Wario Ware Touched! can not be. If you are interested in Wario Ware title I recommend that you stick to the GBA brethren. Kirby is possibly the most fun game of the year. I have beat it and unlocked most things now. It is great for both short and long play times. Meteos is... I don't know. I think it is mandatory. I can't say it is overly fantastic, but I keep playing it. It is an excellent way to pass 5 to 15 minutes, but I really don't know if I like it or not. I feel... compelled to play it. |

| It's offical, I'm buying a DS this weekend, even though I'm sure everyone who works at the local EB games will try to talk me into buying a PSP and remind me how Nintendo is the "GAYZORZ!!". Is Another Code worth importing or should I just you know... wait for the US release? |

Given that it's out here in Australia, it should already be out on the US. Go and ask for at your favourite video game retailer.
It seems to have got a very limited release here, though, as I've only seen one other copy of it on shelves since I bought it. I don't know if this is the case in the US, though. |

I really dig my DS. All the aforementioned games are worth getting. Also, include the JP version of Mr Driller (cuz its got 1 card multiplay).
That said, I know some people don't agree with this, but the DS has some serious ergonomic issues. It's fine to play it at your desk or in your lap, but when open, it's so thin in depth that it won't fit in your palm like a controller, but the button placement is set-up like a controller. You end up putting unnecessary strain on your fingers rather than carrying the weight in your palms. Not to mention the four face buttons are way too close to the side.
Here's hoping Ninty puts out a DS SP next year. |

Can I rant? Let me rant.
The DS fucking sucks.
I got one at launch, thinking "Well hey, it'll be like having one of those GBASPs I never got, and I'm sure some awesome DS games will be out soon.
I can't even comprehend that the DS has been out for almost an entire year. It baffles me that there's still not one fucking game out there I really, really want. I have like Puyo Pop Fever and Meteos is ooming in the mail, but I mean... how hard would it have been to get Advance Wars out for launch? Its fucking Advance Wars, you know they havent changed the graphics or the layout at all. Just design some maps over a weekend and you have a game.
(Did you know the DS can't even run a good amount of GBA games without freezing? Good luck playing Metal Slug Advance or Megaman Battle Network 4 - sure glad I sold my GBA so I could get the DS.)
But no, you ported Super Mario 64. I laughed when I found this out. My biggest pet peeve with the GBA was the ports. They took Super Mario All-Stars, broke it down into five parts and sold them each for $30 apiece. All the while I said "Nintendo, you have fucking made possibly the greatest piece of 2D hardware ever, for the love of god make a new Mario game." But no, they ported, ported games I've already played to death and tacked the Mario Bros. arcade game on like it made it worthwhile. And lo and behold, here comes Nintendo, talking about how they're totally going to shake shit up with their awesome new system. And they port Mario... again. People have asked me why I give Nintendo shit for porting SM64 when I'm all excited about the PSP ports of like Tales of Eternia and Megaman Legends. Because, those are games that I want to play again - that would be fun on the go. Games that weren't huge sellers and it'll be nice to see them get another chance on the PSP. But Mario? Fucking Mario? I've played Mario. We've all played Mario. Yeah you fixed the graphics and added some minigames - many of which arent even games (Yoshi's "she loves me not" simulator is a real step forward in minigame design) - but its still the same fucking game with worst controls.
I don't know, maybe I'm just angry. Angry because the DS seems like the shoddiest product I've ever purchased. The paint is chipping off, the right D Pad doesn't work right anymore (I have to send it to Nintendo) but worst of all, you know how they tell you to use that thumb thingy to control games? What they don't tell you is that thing wears down easy, and starts scratching the hell out of your screen after a week. I can feel the screen scratching while I play, it's the most disgusting feeling ever.
If you're going to make a touch screen at least send me a screen protector with the system - because I swear it took 6 months before I could even find a DS screen protector in a store. Go get a PDA one and cut it down they said - yeah, I could barely get my PSP one on without trapping dirt under it, last thing I need are some extra steps to fuck up.
Now, the PSPs game library sucks right now as well, but at least the PSP can play movies and music and show me porn I've loaded onto my gigabite memory stick. Thats worth my $350 right there - before we even get to the goddamn emulators. I like my PSP.
I mean who knows, there's a lot of great DS games on the way. Castlevania, Mario Kart, Lost in Blue, etc. But the DS still feels like a slap in the face. That Metroid demo makes me want to cry at how bad it is (Chain scoring in an FPS? WTF) and now that Nintendo makes a 3D handheld they're finally making the 2D Mario I wanted?
That's funny...
Heh
Heheh....

Sucks that your DS was defective - mine plays GBA like a dream, the buttons all work ok and the screen is still nice. If you scratch the screen or wear down the thumbslide (???) you're pressing way too hard. |
