Legalstep, if you come to Vancouver, we'll hit up Tojo's, considered one of the best sushi joints in North America. Hope this helps.

This is a fine topic. However, I suggest we add some sort of all-you-can-eat provision.
That is of course unless you really like paying a buck fifty for each tiny, thin strip of salmon, in which case have fun with your Dollarmatian and your robot maid there, Richie Rich. |

I know a very cool sushi place in Edinburgh. Near Grassmarket Square.
I think 25 quid would fill you up and it's excellent stuff. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. |

Cool next time I'm in Edinburgh with monies I will eat like a filthy gaijin.
I stumbled upon a Japanese restaurant near Glasgow uni once but this was immediately after having my cash card swallowed so no ramen for me. |

I'm a fan of California-style sushi. This is distinguished from traditional sushi primarily through use of ingredients.
Avocado, for example.
If you're in Santa Cruz, try and go to the Pink Godzilla. It's tasty. |

Oh yes, I recently had some shrimp tempura myself, with green onions and drizzled with strong horseradish sauce.
It was the best roll I'd had in years. |

Yes and yes. I knew somebody who worked there. I do have a friend who's a chef at a better Japanese restaurant but they don't really do sushi and I can't remember the address.
I heartily recommend Uminoie, on East 3rd St., which while not having any sushi at all does have New York's finest selection of shochu. It is also run by two cute girls. |

| As much as I love the art that goes into sushi, I can't stand to eat the stuff. I can't stand seafood, and raw meat isn't a favorite of mine either. Although I will say raw chicken is substancially worse than any raw fish I've had, raw beef being the tastiest of the three. |

They are opening a new japanase restaurant in my town in 8 days.
I hope it's better than the current one (not that it's hard).
But! I'd prefer it to be a "normal" japanese restaurant, with ramen and dangos and stuff instead of another too-expensive sushi joint |

Why couldn't they stay in the countries, these Portuguese people, eh? They and their unhealthy eating habits. |

I eat at Morimoto fairly often. It's nice having a girlfriend with a business expense account as our meals can run upwards of $200. They have some amazing Korean entrees and thier a la carte sushi is top notch.
The bibimbop with yellowtail chirashi is so good you'd push a nun out of the way just to get to it.
And the desserts. Yeah.
Here's the chocolate tower:
It was so good i had to take a photo of it.
It annoys me when people don't dip thier sushi into soy sauce chirashi side first. |

Raw chicken?! is poisonous! seriously, chicken is one of those things that you absolutely must cook right the way thru! There aren't steak-tartar chicken version dishes you know!
As to that sushi place near Glasgow uni. - the one on Byres Road? Have you tried the Queen St. one? They have a lot of different types of fishies, you can go there and pretend you are in Darius, doing really well against the undersea kingdom.
I do so like wasabi, of course first time I tried it I didn't know it was hot and burny, it has a weird effect on the back of my neck in two places......sea vegetables, teriyaki soy, sea-veg. agar for jelly, sticky rice - what variety, green tea, white tea, chopsticks, select fishies........damn I'm hungry now.
Given the avatar, you may also want to check out - Cafe Mao. Imagine there was a Cafe Hitler......... |

The best sushi place in New Orleans closed down ... and turned into a hair parlor. The chef and his assistant moved to New Orleans from Japan and had a specialty roll that was basically an inside out roll; cucumber wrapped around tuna, salmon, roe and rice. It was probably one of the rolls I have ever had.
So what happens when this one closed down? About 3 blocks away a place opens up that is now the best sushi place in New Orleans (but if Ashahi was still open it would have been the best of the two) and is about 33% more expensive on Sushi.
I also live about 4 miles from the worst sushi place I have ever eaten at. I have eaten sushi at over 30 locations in over 5 states. Yes, even California (but this was not on the coast, it was in the north and inland...) and New Orleans has some really great Sushi. If anyone wants to go out for some while in the area I will give directions. |

Same here. Mine probably wasn't as cheap as yours. Something like 2500 for a chef's sampler platter that included 10-15 pieces, with one or two being amazing otoro, and a side of smoked eel as well. I think I'll still keep my sushi eating to the evening, because this breakfast sushi had me feeling odd all day. |

Living out here for over what nearly 2 years now...and ive got to say....LA sushi has some problems....I've run across far too many places that make "specialty sushi" (this is of course the non-traditional sushi rolls, which i like mind you, if made well). The problem is they make a group of rolls usually with the fake crab stuff and than top it with a bunch of crap in one huge pile...Like cover a bunch of rolls in some sort of sauce or something....now im not talking a little bit, im talking soaking the whole thing till it becomes mush...and then you couldnt even eat an individual roll...
Who the hell though of this trend....I've never seen it on the east coast...
Personally i find it kind of sad that the best sushi place ive been to (and ive been to a lot) is in Baltimore... |

It's probably owned by teh Chinese.
You dip sushi fish side into the soy sauce. The rice soaks up to much soy sauce and you don't taste the fish if you do it the other way. |

Real wasabi is indeed expensive and making any wasabi in the quantity needed by a restaurant is painful. That shit will seriously burn your eyes. I've seen hardened veterans unable to complete the task.
Best way not to piss off your sushi chef- buy him beer and lots of it. |

| A 350 dollar lunch? For some reason - and I can't quite place it here - I don't feel too bad for that chef despite the horribly uncouth American rubes dabbing their soy sauce with the wrong side. |

I knew most of the tips. I only rarely add any thing to the sushi and when I do it is a smear of wasabi across the top. I am a little supprised they did not cover the ginger. I love soy sauce, but have only used it a very few times with sushi, and it was usualy because the sushi was bad. That wasabi bit was interesting. I have never had real wasabi aparently.
Also, how would you pronounce: omakase? I want to try that next time. See if it works. |

One thing they fail to mention is the correct order to eat your sushi (subtile flavored fish first, strong tasting fish last)...though i suppose if your getting it served omakase than thats not a problem...
I have had real wasabi before (it helps to know a waitress whose the owners niece), its a totally differnt experince (and flavor) from your typical neon green mixed paste.... |

Seconded!
Though my fondest raw-fish memories are of a little smoky restaurant near where I lived in Nishinomiya, Kansai. A large bowl of maguro-don (rice, raw tuna, seeweed and Mysterious Spices) along with a large bowl of warm udon, and a supply of scaldingly hot tea. Ritually split your chopsticks in the Azumanga-Daioh-certified method least likely to create an ugly break, carefully mix wasabi with soy sauce and pour it in circular motions on your don --- and you may begin.
Savor the don in small doses; gulp tea when you hit a mother lode of wasabi, and chow down some tasteless udon when the taste of the spices starts to become too strong. The elements are complementary and don't really work well on their own; but put them together and as far as I'm concerned it's The Perfect Meal.
God, I miss Japan sometimes.
The role of side dishes is often neglected in sushi but in my view they're essential. The next time you have some, try taking some very hot tea with it: it's a completely different experience. |

Fuji is good, but Ichiban on Essen blows it away. I work downtown and I've yet to check out Tsunami. From what I hear Tsunami is pretty expensive... you are paying for atmosphere more than food. |

Well, the location in Lafayette is maybe about $1 more expensive than anywhere else. It's not that bad, and some of the rolls were pretty good. The atmosphere there sucks, though. But apparently it's better in Baton Rouge! So!
I've been meaning to check out Ichiban since first spotting it but I haven't been able to convince anyone to go with me. Too far away from campus, I guess. |
