He was drinking heavily. Those who are following the 'deuce cuts back on the booze' saga will be happy (?) to know that he's back to wasting $20 to $40 a day on alcohol, and one year closer to liver failure!

Also, I think he accidentally hung up on me.

He said that he was bored by sobriety, basically.

I think he should save up a half-week's worth of booze money, and see a hypnotist instead.

Is he the kind of person to be open to the power of suggestion? Given the impression he gives off in most of his posts, I would say not!

We love you Deus, that's all.

Don't you think being bored by sobriety is kind of depressing?

If you ask me, sobriety can produce some of the most wonderful feelings a person can ever have.

Exactly what he said. From the research that I have conducted, it is said that everybody can be hypnotized, but not all methods work for all people. Pansy hypnotists may be stymied.

You should try getting drunk just once to see if it straightens you out.

It could be a fun experiment! Or not.

Don't think I haven't!

I am a little less inhibited but I can't say I enjoy it anymore than being sober. It's useful for when I need to be active in social situations, but that's about it. I don't get anything out of it personally.

Meditation is the art of controlling your brainwaves. Save yourself the grief of flying blind, and try using something like NeuroProgrammer or BWGen.

After a while, you'll be able to recognize the feeling of going up or down; of being at a certain brainwave state. At that point, you'll have a memory reference for meditation. Digital training-wheels, basically.

Yeah, I've found being at a party with a bunch of people I don't know goes over much well if I've had a little nip here and there.

Drinking was kind of fun when I was younger and it was illegal, but now that I'm 21 I can't really find the point in it other than just because I can.

Though let it be said that a little alcohol can make a mediocre videogame much better.

It's simple: When drinking alone it's much easier to pretend you have friends sitting next to you.

That really isn't as sad and pathetic as I just made it sound. It's the people who drink alone all the time I worry about.

I don't bother with that, and so cannot help you. It's like doing some pushups and thinking that it alone will get you into shape.

If you're learning how to meditate just to clear your mind and relax a bit, then here's how you do it: Focus your consciousness on each part of your body, releasing tension at each point as you go along. If you start to think about something else during this process, imagine pushing it away, and refocus on the part of your body that you are trying to relax. It may take more than one pass, as you may unconsciously tighten up in certain areas even after you've relaxed once. After you've consciously smoothed out every part of your body, and can't find any parts that have tightened up again, contemplate blackness for a while.

Congtratulations, you have cleared your mind and relaxed a bit.

Now will you teach me kung-fu, Psiga?

Is it also meditation if you "get in the groove?" Like, really zero in on one mind-set and fall into deep focus?

I'll talk more about it later.

They take years or decades to learn what some good biofeedback can train you to do in weeks (if approached properly).

The most fundamental thing to know, and I said it before but it's absolutely worth saying again, is that meditation is the art of controlling your brainwaves. Being relaxed and having a clear mind are the prerequisites for that. No mystical mumbo-jumbo, no zen koans.

And Persona is on to something: Being 'in the zone' is proven to be a certain brainwave state in the Alpha region. Your brainwaves slow down and focus on the task at hand. Being 'in the zone' is being in the threshold between intellectual thought and autonomic functioning -- your body is wholly dedicating itself to the task that you are thinking about.

Finding that state as a newbie meditator without aid is like trying to use a tapemeasure in the dark.

tds: DJ had been up for about 20 hours, and drank about $30 worth of booze, so he's probably unconscious right now.

I saw a hynotist twice. The two sessions were 40 bucks, and it was money well spent. Sure, it didn't cure me of all my problems, and I've even gotten worse since then, but finally being able to relax--good stuff. I would fall asleep out of pure exhaustion or plain habit before, not because I was in a restful state.

Technicallty, yes. In this case, we have decided that he wants to become inebriated by glasses of water, and/or be able to become drunk/undrunk on command. No paying for alcohol, no potential puking, no liver damage, no worries about hangovers, and could become instantly sober in the event that heavy machinery needed to be operated.

I'm Drinking Again

(ry cooder & jim keltner)

Yes, it's me and I'm drinking again
Tell everybody I'm drinking again
Doctor said it'd kill me
But he didn't say when
Have mercy, I'm drinking again

Yes, it's me and I'm drinking again
I'd like to dry out but I doubt if I can
My baby said she'd quit me but she didn't say when
'cause I'm drinking again

Working two jobs, tryin' to get straight
Don't need the money, just want to lose weight
Gonna get you all the things that you lack
Diamond ring and a red cadillac
Came home drunk and pushed you around
Don't you quit me baby, don't you put me down

I'll never do it again
I'll never do it again
I'll never do it again
I promise this time

I came home last night about half past four
Whole neighborhood was rocking out on my floor
And my baby was working up under the sheet
With a teenage boy that lives down the street
I grabbed a bottle, he grabbed a gun
I heard somebody holler: shoot him 'fore he runs
And that's the reason why I'm drinking again
Tell everybody I'm drinking again
You can't lick 'em and you just can't win
Yes, it's me and I'm drinking again

Ain't it enough to start you drinking again
We got to live in a world full of sin
Thank you jesus for what you have done
I'm sick and tired tryin' to be number one
Change my suit, change my shirt
Change what I dig and get out of the dirt

I'll never do it again
I'll never do it again
I'm going to get back in my gin
I'm drinking again

I like alcohol personally...

I usually have a little in my system regularly. It makes babbling senslessly a bit easier... and things usually go over better when I'm babbling senslessly.

However, I don't like getting drunk, or even "buzzed"... I don't know, I just don't get anything out of it? It just makes me feel stupid, inept, and a bit confused.

Jesus Christ, people. I pass out for ten hours and look what happens!

I was drinking "alone" because I'd already gotten sort of unreasonably drunk at dinner at the sushi place when I didn't mean to, and was running up the walls when I got home waiting for it to go away. So, Elisa told Psiga to call me basically to get me to leave her alone because she was playing World of Warcraft (and also drinking heavily, might I add).

Then it became a fun experiment to see, if I added still more alcohol, at what point it would become noticable and at what point I regained complete control of my facilites.

Plus, I'm just a chatty bitch! I like talking on the phone. I think that's probably more depressing than the drinking. I wasn't being an emo sobstory and only talking to Psiga because nobody else would listen to me talk about how I was drinking to kill the pain. Though in retrospect, that would be been kind of funny, given my personality.

I did accidentally hang up on you, though, Pat. The phone's batteries died becase we'd left it off the charger for two weeks straight.

Anyway, I'm awake and sober now (and feel fine, amazingly enough).

Tell you what, though. I'll give myself a week or so of total sobriety, let's say fron now until I go to the IC meet in new york. I might have a beer or two, particularly tonight as my parents and brothers are taking me out, but no being drunk.

I appreciate the concern, though! Makes me feel all snuggly, but I assure you all I'm fine and can stop and start whenever I like without "needing" to. Anyone who's spoken to me while plastered or seen me like that in person knows that -- with the exception of that Night in New York at Karoshi's friend's bar -- I'm a really stable drunk.

I just, I dunno, LIKE drinking. That can be analyzed eight ways from Sunday, but the bottom line is I enjoy the state of mind it puts me in and am basically genetically immune to a lot of the short-term negative side effects, so why the hell wouldn't I do it? Drinking is fun!

Alas, that logic fails: Alcohol already tastes like piss.

Rya, I think you'd probably benefit the most, out of anyone here, of going to a bar somewhere, getting absolutely shitfaced, and hitting on every girl in a 300 foot radius while barely able to stand. If nothing else, just to say that you did.

DeusJester & Psiga: IC's very own Beavis & Butthead.

I was gonna suggest that those two, or two other IC guys should film themselves as they make witty comments about video games that they are watching. But then again, that might not be so interesting (guess it depends on the folks I suppose).

I actually have a bunch of jackass-style videos of my brother and I we made when we were 16 or so. If I could find a way to post them, I would.

The best one is of us as babies that my mom made. I think I told Psiga this story at E3. Anyway, remember those Turtle Sandboxes? That had a lid shaped like a turtle shell you put over the thing to keep the rain out? So, my mom was filming us to make some Adorable Baby Videos to show my grandparents. I'm four, my brother had just turned two. So, he's sitting on the ground smiling at the camera and I'm wandering around, and my mom says "Matt, come show grandma how nicely you play with your brother" and I'm like "Ooo~kaaay" and wander over.

Then I pick the lid up -- a pretty big friggin' lid -- and start to drag it off the sandbox. I stop halfway, look at the lid, look my brother, look at my mom, look back at the lid, look back at my brother, grin like a maniac, and haul off and smash him right in the face with it. For no reason. I really swing that fucker, too and catch him right in the side of the head with this great "boooong!!" sound. Baby goes flying, my mom just goes "MATT!!" and I'm pointing at my brother and laughing myself silly.

We watched that video a few years ago, and of course it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. My brother, though, didn't laugh at all and just looked at me and went "I remember that! Dude, you were a jerk."

My brother also has one of himself actually peeing on a cop in Paris while completely bombed, and then getting the shit beaten of him. That one's a little more horrifying than funny, but I lauged pretty hard when I saw it.

I dunno. Injuries are funny! Not coincidentally, I thought the Jackass movie was brilliant. Maybe I'm just an immature 14 year old at heart. Oh well!

Drinking isn't half as bad as people make it out to be. Drinking alone depends on the circumstances.

Drinking BECAUSE you're alone? Bad move.

Coming home from a physically tiring day of work with that small sense of self satisfaction that "I did pretty good today", sitting in your favorite chair doing whatever it is you like to do, accompanied by a double scotch on the rocks: Good way to unwind, that's the truth.

Dude, bear in mind that bars and clubs in Germany tend to be populated by 14 and 15 year olds, since the drinking age is lower. It's not going to fix anything -- it's more likely to inspire him to do the things that we all hope he doesn't do. Inebriation + roricon + room full of teenieboppers = ;_;

As for doing the Beavis & Butthead of video games... We hardly talked about games, really. Only toward the end when we started talking about WoW and Diablo 3 rumors -- he was almost entirely sober by that point. Most of our conversation was about the real-life social quality of IC members compared to most internet communities, various horrible family stories, experiments in inebriation, nuances of weight gain, working in the field of journalism for money, the JFK assassination, unintentionally painting the walls with your own blood, and so forth. We did geek out a bit and talk about how ludicrous AES carts are when compared to Hu Cards, though.
