FORCE FEEDBACK IT IS.
Seriously, that's perfect. Everything's come full circle, plus it's an in-joke, plus we're ripping off Drew! Three hit combo for the win.
Psiga, if you are reading this today (the 2nd of Feb.) and aren't doing anything, call my house (AIM hasn't been working for me for like a week now). We're putting this together like right fucking now, but I'm way too inept to do it myself.
I want to try to get something -- anything, it doesn't have to be even remotely good -- out the door by the end of today. Just to poke around and see how (or if) this can work. |

| I knod of think there should be some small part of this designated for a random forum member to rail against something without any rebuttal or anything. Like get Fort to talk about Killer7. I mean, I love the game, but I could stand to hear some hate thrown its way. |

| We need to have a show before we contact people to be on the show. Tim Rogers should buy me a really good bluetooth headset. I think my laptop accepts bluetooth, so I should be able to walk around untethered while talking about...stuff. Things and stuff. |

Go into your computer's control panel and look for a little bluetooth icon. I'd make sure you have it before spending money, because if you don't have it, it's not something you can typically just toss onto the computer.
This could be interesting. Though right now it sounds like a lot of people yammering. You might make a preliminary show or something, just to outline what you're trying to do, and explain what you want to bring to the table. Finish it up with some news after the exposition. Ugh... and I hate the words blog and podcasting. The idiots who came up with them should be shot. Verily. |

Arr. Thanks. Yeah, looks like it came out in the model after mine. Along with those "trubrite" polarized coatings for the screens.
I'm ready for a new laptop now! We'll add it to the list. New guitar, new laptop, new jacket, etc. etc..
The good side of this is that I'll end up with a much cheaper but better sounding tethered headset. Meager consolation, but I'll take what I can get. |

Mh, they do sell bluetooth usb quite cheaply. Twenty-some, plus the cost of a bluetooth headset (which I'd probably be a dunce and pay $70 for so I can get a good one). Hundred bucks, easy, if I do it my way.
I've heard good reviews of this tethered headset, and I could probably get a splitter adapter to allow it to plug into my laptop. $30 or so, overall, with better sound quality -- but I'd be tethered, which is what I don't want.
Stymied. Aside from Force Feedback and some general time-killing conversations over Google Talk, I don't have a use for it, so $30 to $100 is tough to swallow. At least without the sweet, sweet nectar of wealth to wash it all down. |

| I've got a laptop that has one, and one that doesn't have one. In most cases, at least from what I see on the market, bluetooth is an optional feature, it's typically not something that comes pre-packaged. (Though it's becoming more common, finally.) |

I recorded some stuff of just me yammering, simply to have something to putz around with as far as editing. I just go off on a rant with zero script: If anyone wants it, I'll upload it to LPN and we can all leech off Tim's Lik-Sang sponsored bandwidth. It's not particularly interesting, though, so we should probably wait until we get...You know. More. From other people.
Alright, I have the day off today. Provided WoW doesn't suck up all my computer time, we'll see what's what.
Extralife: It's decided! Force Feedback! But, you can participate. Duh. I've heard your voice, it's pleasing to the ear! Though Kapparu has some half-asian Vin Diesel thing going on, so I think he beats all of us.
(Do you have any idea how dumb it sounds to actually say One Coin? Try it! It's one of those things that would make for a good print title, but you automatically accrue 50 nerd points for speaking it out loud. I tried.) |

Most Don LaFontaine wannabes can make "One Coin..." sound good. You know, in that sort of way:
"One coin...
is all it takes...
Two ramblers...
talking about video games THEIR WAY...!"
I dunno what way that is. |

Tell you what: If someone works "One Coin" into a themesong we can use, then that will totally be the name.
Also: Sklat! Looks like some stuff is going down this weekend, in a preliminary sense. If you want in, let me know. I've got Kappuru and Newave's phone numbers in hand, so you KNOW it's getting serious now. |

Dude. You're telling me to get a Sony FW900, and you're considering this?
You need nothing less than a Shure SM7, a dbx 386 preamp, and an E-mu 1212M.
...I'm joking of course...
Kind of. |

Studio mics are not headmounted portable, though. I want to be able to walk around while talking.
Really, I'd enjoy having good enough gear to do a real broadcast-quality interview show with. I could call up the weirdos who are into all this fringe science that I'm interested in, and hear what they have to say.
I don't like the sound of my voice, though, and one of my teeth is slipping back to the degree that I slur my esses a bit. $4k invisaligns, there. Oh, and my sinuses are usually blocked, which causes a slightly obnoxious nasalized sound, I think. But there again, you've heard me on the phone, so maybe your opinion is different.
Hm. I just thought of something... I might be able to connect my phone to the voice-modem on my laptop, and use it as a mic of sorts. |

Incidentally..
Earthworks QTC50, Earthworks 1021, and Altmann Creation ADC.
I'd need a shockmount and a pop-screen. Perhaps I am naive, but I don't think I'd need an analog tube preamp for spoken word recordings. Would record at 192k, then run it through my lovely darling Ozone3, and likely add some sort of convolution reverb (the weak reverb options are my only gripe against Ozone). I seem to recall hearing of a mic in the $300 range which is extremely complementary toward vocals, so perhaps I'd take that over the obsessively, clinically exacting and expensive QTC50. |

The dbx 386 isn't all that well regarded for music and singers...but I find it to be a killer spoken word preamp. And your radio station vocal staples are the RE20 and the SM7. I'm pretty fond of the SM7 myself. I haven't tried the Heil dynamics, which some of my studio friends think are really awesome spoken word.
Big dynamics over small condensers for spoken word is a general rule of thumb...
But in the end, it's all case by case basis. For some reason, I sound pretty good on this 10 dollar Chinese SM57 knockoffs I got the other day. I have a 30 dollar conenser that only sounds good on this one guy I recorded VO for. Just him. |

| Yeah, that's where years of experience beats years of googling. I am hedging my bets on the idea that buying the most expensive, crystal clear shit and then coloring it with digital filters is going to bring it all home -- but the truth is that an experienced and street-wise professional would be able to make me sound better with gear that costs 1/10th the price. |

GENTLEMEN...BEHOLD!!1 I am actually doing stuff! Admittedly it's ten seconds of me with a frog in my throat, but point being I'm not just pretending to work on this. This is indicative of effort, however minor!
Note: This is just a little test to see how music editing sounds. There's an annoying hum which I'm pretty sure is my asstacular microphone. I just now found a way to fix that, so that humming you hear in the background should be gone for the actual thing. Also: A request is made! Listen!
And note that it's now 4AM. If you're wondering why I sound like I'm dying, that's why. I've been doing this for four hours. Two of those were spent just trying to get my mic to work again, and one was fixing my computer after it crashed while I was trying to get my mic to work.
Not the best start ever.
Extra bonus points if you can place the music within three seconds of hearing it. |

I can't find a good group chat app. There has to be something, though. I want something that can position each stream, so we can make it sound like one voice is to the left, one's in the middle, and so forth.
Google Talk and IM2 both have supposedly really good voice chat ability, but they're mono, and crap for music streaming. So the music would have to be mixed in later; we wouldn't really be able to start playing a song and then have everybody talking about the thing as it plays.
Fucking shit, all of it. It's all fucking shit. |

There's nothing wrong with mono. AM radio, the last bastion of talk radio, is mono. Instead, make things fit within the frequency spectrum: low-mids, mids, high mids, mids...etc.
Dude, DJ. You've got a solid voice. Very radio. I can hear you saying: "Here I am with my three cheese manicotti, and while I'm eating, you can feast your ears on the choice sounds of: Thomas Dolby..."
Or something like that.
Oh yeah. Looks like the TWIT guys work with Skype. Maybe a cheap physical mixer for yourself is what you need? (You can get cheap little Behringer and Phoic mixers for less than 50 bucks easily...) |

Have you considered Nero Wave Editor? With your PC's native Recording Controls set to "What U Hear", Nero should be able to pick up whatever verbal diarrhea your computer puts out. Have files, can send. |

Elisa said basically the same thing when she heard it.
Okay, I still have zero idea how to do this with more than one person. So, if you sent me your number and I'm not calling you right now, it's because I still don't have much to tell you.
Worst case scenario, I do a drunken rant by myself. That'll be fun! Either way, I'll do something before I go to bed. Dunno what, but I'll post it, anyway.
I'm on google talk RIGHT NOW (midnight), also, if you have my phone number and want to see if I can jury-rig this through the phone somehow, go ahead and call. If you don't have my number but wanna try anyway, PM me or something and I'll give it to you. It'll be like a fucking pizza party, I dunno.
I'm gonna get really drunk now.

GENTLEMEN...BEHOLD...THIS THING!
It's just another 20 second speech of me grumbling into the microphone, but I think I've got the hiss more or less eliminated, and I continute to figure out what sounds decent as far as mixing music into the background, fading it in and out when appropriate, dimming it once the talking starts, that kind of thing. Yay! Hopefully we'll actually do something tomorrow.
The only problem I can gather with this one is that the whole thing is way too quiet, but that's really easy to fix. It's weird how much we say "uhhh" without realizing it, isn't it?
Also: More fun with the music selection! I'm gonna burn through all my cool-sounding stuff at this rate. |

I just want to mention that Skype is incredibly amusing. I've had a lot of confusing conversations with people trying to learn English on it.
I'm not entirely sure how many users you can have in a single chat either. My biggest concern with Skype is that it's a little laggy, and it doesn't seem to be based much on your location. I got the same amount of lag speaking to people in Malaysia as I did speaking to a friend living half an hour from me (both of us on broadband too). So... it might not be the greatest choice. Unless they've updated it a little lately and somehow managed to decrease that lag.
I imagine this happens in every VOIP program.
test2.ogg was sounding good. It might have a tiny bit of microphone hiss, or it might be ambience?! I'm not sure about these things, most likely just background noise or something?!?! Regardless it sounded good.
But yes. Lag between people talking might lead to some unusual conversations. |
