I don't think there's any reason to assume that the 'byproducts' of video game things can only be written about from the perspective of someone deeply infatuated with them, or I guess like you say from a perspective at all.

It's another subject altogether, but it seems like the same arguments could be made against any kind of media criticism or theory. And it's probably true that you could hold that position in an argument and win it, in spite of the past however many hundred years of literary criticism. For people that are invested in stuff like that, the fact that it is socially irrelevant or logically superfluous is not even really an issue... it happens, and some of it is damn interesting!

But you know, no one ever has to do anything, anywhere, at any time. Writing (or reading) stupid things about videogames, whether overly emotional and nostalgic or dry and academic, is essentially of no less worth than buying, playing, and learning about them. I don't see any reason to get upset either way...

i love the word the way some people here love games. (i find more and more just how unhardcore a gamer i ever was, even when i was NJHCgamer. most of you make me look like a rank dilletante)

my love of words makes me loathe those who would use those words against themselves, or to further utterly retarded, ascientific agendas of windmill churning, or merely stockpile rhetorical ammunition as a dumping ground to use against cowardly undergrads and their peers.

not a whole lot of people teaching semiotic warfare, for example. plenty teaching a secularist version of church, however.

so in a way, i sort of understand the whole "keep your dick away from my hobby" thing, though writing about games mostly lacks the malicious retardation of literary theory, for example. perhaps it needs another 50 years to percolate (or more like 10, since the world is getting faster).
