Episode 5!
Meeting Commence!!

There's one thing that the ending sequence keeps reminding me:
In like episode 2 or three, Saori (aka Hermes! I finally remember her name!) says that she doesn't remember what Densha looked like during their first meeting because she wasn't wearing her glasses at the time. However, on the train in their first meeting, she's reading a BOOK. She can read a book but not see someone's face clearly?
(This is assuming she's not near-sighted or something logical like that.)

In any case, going back to the episode:
Wow! Action packed! Densha grew a backbone! The camera pans and zooms! The Aladdin Channel message board team is slowly getting lost admist the action! This is intense action, people!

I'm glad Densha is finally taking some steps to actually get to know Hermes better. I mean, normal people usually have conversations in their first few meetings and get to know each other better, right? When Densha and Hermes had their first few dinners, they just seemed to have polite chit-chat without ever really getting to know each other. Now, I don't know the specifics of the culture and whether it's possible to have such thralling polite subject-less discussions over and over... but yeah, that Saori girl is really very polite to stand such boring dinner meetings more than once. She's also either very patient or very bored+lonely. I think Densha's entering her life is almost a blessing to her seemingly boring life of hanging around her men-obsessed friends and listless OL work.

For further analysis, let's take a look at her family status:
Her family seems to be finacially upper middle class, judging from her big Western styled house. Her mother and father are seemingly all but officially seperated and her delinquent brother left home due to clashing egos. At a young age, approximately sometime during jr. high and beyond, Saori and her brother were raised in America (specifically in LA! Ha! As if there are phone booths in LA!) and were later taken care of by the Restaurant Brother. Now for some guessing: Saori is also the oldest child and thus had the responsibilities to maintain a stable job and all that, which allowed her younger brother to go and be wild. Most likely her brother, Keisuke, is the mother's favorite child judging from how easily she accepted him back into the house. (I'm factoring in the traditional views of how male children are favored and spoiled over the females in Asian cultures.) In any case, I'm guessing this made Saori grow up as the responsible one, which also results in a boring lifestyle.

So in conclusion, befriending anime otaku if your life is boring might be pretty interesting.
CONJECTURE!!

So anyway, returning to Densha:
CURRENT DENSHA KILL LIST:
Episode 1: the woman whose husband beats her
Episode 2: Laid-off Lover
Episode 3: Basketball Flamer
Episode 4: Cheating Husband
Episode 5: Bratty Patient Girl

It seems that the trend for killing off a poster is to introduce him/her in the episode prior so the audience has some exposure to the character and can feel some loss. The exception was the Basketball Flamer but his villain character was developed enough in one episode for the audience to feel some connection to him when he felt remorse and turned to good side (AKA exploded after the Megazord cut him down).

It could also be argued that this episode's defeated monster was the Hick Stalker but since he's not a poster on the Aladdin channel, he's disqualified.

Now about the episode:
Things were really paced up! The dreaded group meeting between Densha's friends and Herme's friends that the last episode's preview seemed to build so much upon was immediately dismissed in the first ten minutes of the episode! Then the episode ramped up to this grand tale of Saori's stalking and Densha's stepping up to the plate and using the scenario to his advantage and talking to Saori more. It's a nice change of pace from the last episodes of "Let's all see how miserable or ridiculous Densha can be!"
Densha's becoming more NORMAL.
He's even keeping his contacts on during work and dressing better in general - he's really leveled up! (Of course, the preview seems to indicate that he will return to his otakudom full blast at Comiket. I suppose the nature of the event just demands plaid collared shirts, thick glasses, fannypacks, and jeans!)
Besides just his fashion sense, the side characters are also seemingly giving Densha less shit than normal. His surfing mentor willingly agreed to the match-making dinner and The Girl who Gets Around didn't really aggravate him much. Of course, this could just be because the editors needed to cut them out so that the main plot would have more screen time. This is a good thing of course because now the future episodes will actually have content that's full of important context and not just "You can do it, Densha!" filler with CG sequences of the harpooning laces of the interweb piercing Japan and chrome plated exclamations ejaculating out of Japan.

It's kind of sad though because now that Densha is leveling up, the Aladdin channel message board is sort of left to themselves. I mean, the ASCII Bishounen was reduced to summoning the theme song for all the fellow posters this time! If this keeps up and Densha goes on and finds a social life, everyone will be left with nothing... except for each other.

Also, as Aderack said, the stairway scene did go on a bit long. It should have stopped after Densha received the photo from the Hick Stalker, but it seemed they had to milk it to somehow include the little people that helped Densha win the Academy Award. I really did like that scene though; it's like what happens when two bank robbers end up trying to rob the bank at the same time. That and Densha's conversation with the stalker really got to me (though his including details about buying new clothes every time he saw Hermes seemed more like bragging than equal confession). I liked how Densha proposed to resolve the situation too: by taking it to Saori and apologizing. It really seemed far more of a mature solution than something I could come up with.

Also, thanks to Densha Otoko, I now know that the only solution to stalkers with bad teeth is to exile them to the countryside where they can be accepted and their photographic talents can be praised. Afterall, bad stalker otakus with no message board friends MUST be sent away while the ones with backup can totally be allowed to hit up the girls. Yessir.

So in conclusion, this episode was pretty damn good.
I really liked that second-to-last shot they ended the episode with where the camera zooms out and the Hanshin Tigers otaku stands up shouting, "DOES THIS MEAN.. DENSHA CONFESSED TO HER??" It felt really epic. I thought the various zooms and pans they used in this episode really helped to keep that fast paced action. Altogether, the series is coming along pretty well.

You know, this whole series has some pretty good cinematography. The shots they use are interesting and photogenic (with the exception of the single shots of Saori. Those are just uninspired). It's just that something about the way the editors string them all together comes off entirely un..cinematic. Still, for a drama this is pretty damn good.

Now a question to you all:
Which character of Densha Otoko can you relate with most? (Be it a random message board poster or one of the side characters to Hermes and Densha.)

First of all, she's AOYAMA-SAN!! This is most fitting because she works in Aoyama.

WOOHAH

Second of all, regarding the glasses thing:

0. i gave her that book.
1. she might be near-sighted, yeah.
2. she . . . well. do you remember who she was talking to when she said that? her stupid shallow friend. perhaps she was lying? perhaps she knew her friend would tell her to forget the guy if she said what he really looked like? aoyama-san is the kind of person to, you know, follow her instincts, and not what fashion magazines and japanese hip-hop videos tell her.

young persona has never been in a situation where this kind of lie is strategic!

i pity you!

and envy you!!

and then i finish my pasta while eating the rest of your post and drinking red wine . . . i mean fanta grape.

and i mean READING the rest of your post.

yes!! if there are no problems, i will not post again in here until tomorrow night, with REAL TIME updates on the show!!

But then Aoyama san then admits to Densha during their first dinner together that she couldn't see him very well on their first meeting too!

Of course this could be a polite lie as well.

And I think I sort of get how to do the ASCI art now. A lot of it is in overriding the space-limitation (as in blank space).

That it is!

I mean, you SAW how different he looked on their date. He had OBVIOUSLY cleaned himself up a hell of a lot. She didn't want to draw attention to that.

Part-time liars, like any old fiction writers, like to reuse lies. In the case of Aoyama-san, well -- she's a part-time liar being managed by a fiction-writer, so it goes double (and thusly, quadruple) for her!

Just twenty-five hours until the next episode! I already bought my donuts!!

(. . . actually, i . . . care less than i'm pretending. still, it's something to do on thursday night.)

oh, and the "aladdin channel" thing is a fake name. for some reason the producers didn't want to glorify the use 2ch so much that more people started actually reading it.

i wonder why he didn't borrow them?
there is a drama where someone borrows a suit for some event he has to attend but i can't remember what it was.
anyway, i think that borrowing cloth should be an option instead of buying new suits.

Borrow them from whom? You've seen his friends.

Also, he's a little guy. About 155 cm (he's even shorter than Sambo Master dude, and that dude's tiny). It's hard to find his size, even in Tokyo.

Last night's episode ended on too ridiculous a cliffhanger. Next week might be better.

Yeah, it's that typical "nothing really happens" sixth episode. The next one should begin the downward spiral!!

We shall see!!

Tim! I had a dream while I was napping and you were in it!
In the dream we had just beaten 2CH: THE VIDEOGAME and were watching the credits list. It was organized like Cave Story's credit roll with a detailed enemy list at the end, except in 2CH: THE VIDEOGAME's case the enemy list went on for twenty minutes and consisted mainly of Monas and Giko cats.

It'd be kind of fun to play an ASCII version of Cave Story.

I totally pictured an ASCII Cave Story just then. Like, woah, and stuff.

I am downloading the first episode of this...this...abomination right now. It'd be great, if it weren't for the, uh, the absolute lack of any seeds. I've got no activity at all, here.

Once the seeds picked up, I was able to grab ep1 and ep2 in one sitting. 'Watched to just shy of half of the first episode, then paused it and went away to do other things. So far it's really fucking slow to me. Not bad enough to stop watching, but, boy, it doesn't have me by the throat or anything.

And so far I think carrot-ass is pretty cool; I don't know what you people are complaining about.

It'll have to get a lot worse to make me lose interest, but yeah... It's only just cute right now.

Ep2 was nicer to me. The Deus Ex Machina loserdom is getting on my nerves, but I'm still picking up on many of the little details. I liked how the scene with the S[W]AT guys storming the market had music from The Rock, for example. Or was it the music from FF VIII's demo? Hm. I think this one was from The Rock. It should have been from the FF8 demo.

In my opinion, they should've ended with episode 6. Then they could have a bunch of people outraged by the ending, and it wouldn't exactly be false, it's just not where it ends. It's like a lie that isn't really a lie.

Earlier I said I liked this series because every episode seemed to be the turning point. I realized now that it's because the pacing of the show is just very good, it builds it at just the right tempo, at times one might think things are stressed too much, but you realize each part builds the relations and the personality of the characters exponentially.

I guess I'm used to a lot of Japanese shows that dawdle, hell, even Musashi did somehow.

I love the way this episode panned out, like it was going to end so very happy, when you know all along it isn't. It's something a bit more bold than what many dramas tend to do...Then again, to change it would probably be some kind of death message to it's accuracy, in comparison to the "true story."

Also, this series is paced to the t, when comparing it to real life. I mean, didn't Comike just happen.

It's interesting, because a number of us think the pacing is dull and slow. The first episode is constipatedly slow and then it creepingly picks up speed from there. Even in Ep5, I got so frustrated by the beginning that I skipped ahead a couple minutes.

Ukyo wrote:

I'll be honest, I much prefer the pacing of the (few) K-dramas I've seen.

Yeah, that was mentioned earlier. It's pretty damned impressive in that way. And considering we're like a week or so lagging the actual airings, it's really wonderful on their part.

well, is the episode 6-dog the same as featured in episode 5?

Anyway, now there's finally a reason why he appeared out of nowhere in Ep. 5 just to be the reason for Saori liking the film Densha brought with him instead of "The Matrix". Which is pretty much impressive, how could anyone confuse the covers? But hey, it worked out, so good job Densha!

Interesting enough, densha already tried once to "make a lie become reality". It pretty much shows that you can't lie if it's about your hobbies, after all. He did help his friends to sell stuff, so why didn't he tell Saori so? I think she would understand, but Densha is way too scared to tell her off this time.
But pretty impressive decision to go to the comicket (i think it was called this way?) instead dating Saori.

Yes, especially the meeting of all the 2ch-posters at that Benois-shop.
The tension and atmosphere was way too great to be true! Especially as someone mentioned "Densha" and everyone got startled.
Too great to be true, that is!
I found it interesting how the people tended to mix up in groups, and finally the 2ch-posters ways mingle - and how they did!

Persona, who was the monster that was defeated this time? i didn't manage to find out, but you seem to have a sharp lookout for that, please add your thought!

Interesting enough, Mina's Seiyuu is one of Denshas Fans - pretty impressive as well as Saoris pseudo-brother (which is a Mitsu Evo III-fan. he never looked like he would drive such a car, though).
And where did the homeless guy living in his car go? Moved out of town or just going on holidays?

Anyway, finally the 2ch posters give densha a hard time after he was moaning again what to do and if things will work out - it seemed like a 1:0 for the posters, especially for the special effect of being able to write on anything they want in order to guide Densha.

Another Scene i like very much is Saori having trouble to read a catalogue.
It's at minute 04 afair, and as she is trying to turn a page, her hands do get confused by doing it.
I didn't notice the first time i watched, but yesterday i suddenly saw how she struggled to read that catalogue, and it's kind of funny to see that she isn't even capable to move her hands in a proper way (okay, i'm going a little overboard there, but ... it's so apparently wrong.

btw, does anyone know that Animal? Because it's featured two times which is too often to be a coincidence if you think of the setup of everyone's rooms.

ah, i nearly forgot:
Saori's friend, saying "pretend i'm Yamada" ... it's too good to imagine how she would look if she found out that the otaku she was so scared of is the same person she now pretends to be (it's minute 24:29 i think)

so - wanting to know how densha will manage to undo this desaster, i'm waiting for the next ep.

It looks like an animal from a game by Studio E-go. Granted, I haven't played any of their games; it's a guess based on a couple of pictures I've seen before from one of their games that was being fan-translated. The outfit it's wearing is reminiscent of one of the characters I saw.

A quick run to their website reveals three of those things on the opening page, so I suppose it's safe to assume it's a mascot.

There wasn't an overtly obvious monster this time, but I'm going to have to assume:

CURRENT DENSHA KILL LIST:
Episode 1: the woman whose husband beats her
Episode 2: Laid-off Lover
Episode 3: Basketball Flamer
Episode 4: Cheating Husband
Episode 5: Bratty Patient Girl
Episode 6: Comiket Cosplay Idol

They call her "Comic Kingdom's Takeda Karin." There really wasn't any development for her though. I guess they just wanted to show the range of Densha's fanbase.

And where did the homeless guy living in his car go? Moved out of town or just going on holidays?

Once Densha defeats a monster, they DISAPPEAR in a GIANT EXPLOSION.
He was defeated in episode 4, you see.

Anyway, finally the 2ch posters give densha a hard time after he was moaning again what to do and if things will work out - it seemed like a 1:0 for the posters, especially for the special effect of being able to write on anything they want in order to guide Densha.

Yeah, they use the Force to communicate to Densha their desires!
But in the end he doesn't take it and chooses to do things on his own terms.
His own foolish and slow terms....

He also has a more robust mustache, with each episode!

Also. I've noticed that the show is starting to show a little more depth to the random 2ch posters. I kind of like that. It's nice to give them a little more than just encouraging Densha.

I think that something is going to happen with the Hanshin Tigers guy, eventually. He seems to be focused on a lot, compared to the other posters. He's kind of the main Densha-encourager. But, yes. I believe that something is going to happen, with him.

Also, uh, I didn't quite understand part of this episode. When the army-otaku gets yelled at by his father, his father says something like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING MAKING SO MUCH NOISE THIS LATE!" and then he tells him to go to work. Uh, if it was "this late", that would imply that this occured late at night. But, when he goes to "work" (guarding the comic convention), it's day-time, or at least, the sun is out. Did I misread something, or is that a continuity/translation error of some kind?

I assume he's kind of a night guard that carried over into the next day due to the convention. Afterall, there were some otaku lining up for the convention the night before like Densha's friends.

Yeah, next thing you know, you're going to be asking why Densha doesn't drive his CAR everywhere.

People in Japan, when they work, they fucking WORK.

As a side note: I once knew an Army otaku. Collected US Military stuff. Gave me 10,000 yen once for introducing him into Yokota Air Base, where he bought Army rations at the supply store, ate Taco Bell, and loaded up on metal rock CDs. The guy was a shitbag. Still, the experience was fun.

He also bought on Army BDU sweater and about forty five-dollar "AIR FORCE" T-shirts.

He worked nights as a security guard at a Don Quixote in Shimura.

Will someone send Episode 6 (and all subsequent episodes) through AIM or something? My school has done everything in their power to stop me from using torrents.

I've been meaning to ask about this, completely forgot: Does anyone know of a music video featuring a dorky otaku and a man in a rubber monster costume? I could swear it was one of the more pop-ish songs (Is it by those puzzlingly popular Orange Range kids?) but it really reminded me of Densha Otoko (most likely on purpose). I think it might have been done for the movie or something, but in the end, the dorky guy puts on a mask and beats up the evil monster, and gets the girl. I wanted to download it or watch it but couldn't really find it anywhere. If anyone knows anything about what I'm talking about, that would help.

I saw it only once in Japan, but I think it was a top/new song.

Yeah, that's Orange Range with "Love Parade," probably the worst song title ever.

If you want help downloading it, you'll find no such luck here.

Go search for that bullshit somewhere else, you fuckin' kid.

And get the hell off my lawn.

I kind of just wanted it for the visual, not the music. I heard enough Orange Range in Japan, KTHX!!1~~

I should mention, it was the top songs on MTV, and as such, I was watching it without sounds which was really interesting. Basically, most of them either totally suck and totally rock without songs. Then when you add songs, they tend to just totally suck.

But that is how most top music things these kids listen to nowadays goes isn't it?

I was looking for it for the memories, damnit. Do you remember love?! It's like that girl you knew who had nothing in common with you but was "interesting." Hell, you don't even need to like her, you just wonder, how the hell does something like that exist in this world?! And so you look at it, and speculate, and you remember better girls, girls you gave your heart to, that broke it, that healed it, that did everything to it. Do you remember love?!

You get off my lawn! You may be the senile old man with a lawn, but I am the senile old man who just thinks he has a lawn! Much worse!

Usually said old senile kook won't have pants on.

@drem: thanks for information!

Densha ep. 7 is a really awesome though strange highscore-episode.
"much ado about nothing" was up until now, but things start to gear up a bit in episode 7!

Denshas Score:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+ 36,159 for having chosen the festival over Saori
- 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 for selling his games
- 4,294,967,296 for trying to abandom his anime-stuff
+ 934,592 for winning a PSX with more games than he owned
+ 934,592 for getting more anime-stuff than he owned before!
- 7 for fainting in front of Saori for whatever reason
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
High-Score: -18,446,744,078,002,613,576 ..... Z--

Sakurais Score:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+ 500 for being able to position his RC-car next to Densha and Soari without being noticed
+ 3.771 for having a jingle when he found and identified Densha
+ 4.192 for doing a "Knight Rider" Stunt with an RC-car
- 1.234 for having an Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI GSR "Tomi Makinen Edition" RC-car instead of his Mitsubishi Lancer EVO II-car
+ 39.127 for being able to talk to his alter ego (good and bad side)
+ 879.558 for his winning bad side. He's really evil!
- 7 for being to late to Saoris Birthday-Party
+ 792.346 for nearly calling Saori "Hermes" two times!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Results: 1.720.721 ... A++

I'm impressed by the Hanshin Tigers Fan-Poster. His special ability "kill an PC at an instant by stepping on the powercable" is quite impressive.
And he even managed to be out of the Race when things are getting out of hands as Densha wants to quit being an otaku.

This was a heavy blow to me as well, Densha is about to leave all his fandom behind (remember his room looking so awkward plain after he abandoned all his anime-stuff). I can't understand why he does .... it's for Saori, okay, but why does he try to abandon all the things he ever liked so "easily"?

You can't get over things so easy, anime and games where his life, if he is about to forget about them for Saori, i wonder if he can be around Saori all the time ... it's not like she is going to be his "hobby" from now on.
And if she would leave him later on, he wouldn't have anything left in his life. I wonder if he ever could become happy .... it's not like he threw away some "toys".

Getting rid of your hobbies and friends for one girl .... i can't believe people do this for real. ..... Would you do so?

Regarding "Moe" and the definition for the term, didn't Densha become a "Moe" person for some of them since they all want things between Saori and Densha going well?

anyway, Minas Seiyuu is the monster that is defeated, i would say. Persona, your thoughts, please?

Finally, episode 7 left me .... confused. i would even go as far as to say - I'm regret.

Did you not watch the preview for Ep8? He stocks his room to be even more Otaku than ever before. He even cries with the stupid hat thing on, and has snot running out of his nose and everything. I can understand some underdog appreciation for this guy, but the stuttering-lithping-crybaby stuff is really not a good sign of character.

I love the fact that this took place on the 21st, and I've already watched it, subs and all, by the 22nd. They're moving very fast this week.

Good episode in general. I didn't feel that any particular moment dragged out unnecessarily.

This comes a bit late, but was that Kitano Takeshi that told Densha to stop feeding the pidgeons in episode two or three? It sure looked like him.

Additionally, is the "traveller" 2chan (with the beret) a celebrity? He seems to have that feel to him.

The traveler 2chan-kun guy was in Samehada Otoko to Momojiri Onna (shark skin man and peach hip girl.)

He was "yamada" in the movie. Great character.

I didn't watch it, thanks for the info. I wait for the ending to stop, then i skip the preview ... it kind of makes me want to see the next episode asap, but i have to wait then ...
anyway, as far as i have seen, his room is stuffed with brand new anime-stuff. it seems like Hermes want Densha to be an otaku no matter what. .... that's strange. But more important, will the Hanshin Tigers-poster return? Densha will be doomed if he won't return the next episode.

I haven't seen Episode 8 yet but I wanted to update the kill list:

CURRENT DENSHA KILL LIST:
Episode 1: the woman whose husband beats her
Episode 2: Laid-off Lover
Episode 3: Basketball Flamer
Episode 4: Cheating Husband
Episode 5: Bratty Patient Girl
Episode 6: Comiket Cosplay Idol (part 1)
Episode 7: CCI: Idol Learns English - Fucks Over Manager (part 2)
E.7 Sub-boss: Mustached Henshin Tigers Otaku

That idol really annoyed me.
I mean, she's famous in Japan NOW... and yet she gives it up to learn "acting" in America. I mean, holy shit woman, you've got your shit MADE right now and you're giving it up in the peak of your fame (WITH SCREAMING OTAKU WAITING FOR YOU LIKE 10 FEET AWAY!!) just to learn how to say "to be or not to be" at a CC somewhere in New York or something? That's just... I don't know. Get your priorities straight.

I also love how she runs away screaming, "I'm grown up!" It's so very mature, you know?

But anyway, I guess I'll be downloading the new episode now.

Oh yeah, she's idolized by otaku. her career's made, man. What else could a girl aspire to?

But maybe one day, if she works real hard, she might star in a porno.
