Why would the Silent Hill team pick a specifically sexual act to have him commit?
well, for starters, it's very disturbing. since there's no actual genitals or anything you could take a screenshot of and hold up (like at a senate hearing on the depravity of video games), the game makers rely on our (mostly male) brains to fill in the blanks. even if it's not explicitly sexual (and i'm not totally sure it is) it is most certainly suggestive of violation, violence, control, etc.
the problem with this framework is that it can roll in nearly any direction, like finding the will of god in a tornado that destroys your neighbor's home but leaves yours intact (or vice versa).
the other problem is that because we're dealing with games instead of movies or literature, edges had to be rounded down, explicitness pulled away, replaced with suggestive ideas, etc, because there are some lines we cannot fully cross in adult ways in this medium, for the most part.
it is, however, very interesting. |

Jeez boojiboy7, that original post of yours was really excellent. I didn't know you had it in you.
Anyways, I wish I was more familiar with the book "Crime and Punishment". Akira Yamaoka states that it was one of the major influences for Silent Hill 2. I find this interesting from what little I know of the novel.
Anyways, I have been married for over five and a half years. I have been seperated from my wife (because of the hurricane, nothing that either of us could control) since early January. I talk to her on the phone and see her occasionally. Sexual frustration can really bare down on me at times and I could not imagine this going on for years, let alone as much longer as it is going to. Is it a core factor for why our relationship is not perfect right now? No, but it is definatly a factor. I also feel exceptionally depraved at times for things... I would rather not talk about. Sometime when I sit in the lobby of the hotel smoking I will see women walk in and my mind instanly goes haywire thinking of things to do with these women and how I could easily get away with it. Then I just smoke and return to my room feeling disgusted with myself.
But that's not important. Anyways, this thread is out of control, whatever. boojiboy7 made an awesome post, toups made an awesome post, and some other things that were good came out of it. So, all is not at waste. |

Having been a while since I've even seen Silent Hill 2, and having not bothered with the various "Making of..." style books, I was willing to ride along with the "sexual message" theory.
But that letter just doesn't carry such a tone. The only way to get some kind of sexual theory out of that letter is to be looking for one before you even start reading. Which, while I'm not actually trying to defend Olivier or anyone else, is where the split of opinion there is occuring. If you don't see a sexual issue beforehand, the letter isn't going to make you see one. If you do see a sexual issue, then you will see references in the letter, even if they happen to be unintended fictionalizations that you yourself have read into the text.
As for blaming herserlf for being ill? It happens. Both for physical and mental cases. Even when the person has done nothing wrong, or it is just something that happened beyond their control. |

English isn't my first language, so I don't think any Japanese to English "translation" I'd make would really be worthy of that title. I think that would be... presumptuous? I used to work as a translator, so I'm pretty sensitive to that kind of things, I guess. Hence "something like". I'd call it a "précaution oratoire" in French, and I have no idea what that would be in English.
Here, I was just trying to show you how the interpretation you were advocating simply wasn't an option in the original text. That, I believe I can do, even with (what I presume to be) an awkward translation. The meaning's there, even if the wording is a bit weird. Blame my English skills for that.

To the charge of overanalysis, I can only answer that if these symbols and such are accidental, if the game is as straightforward as you would like to believe, why does this all work together to form a system for understanding the game?
