|
A lot of people here are obviously going to be making art assets for their games. I know I'm working on pixel art for the thing I've been working on - and even with a degree in Art Studio (focused on painting/digital media and film history), I suck. This shit uses an entirely different skillset.
Post tutorials, examples, good websites etc. The more we help eachother out, the less shitty all of our stuff will look. Might as well use this thread to post our own art assets also. Or maybe that should be another thread.
I'll update the list and add more categories below as people post:
Tutorials:
Derek Yu's Pixel Art Tutorial
The Complete Guide to Isometric Pixel Art
Zoggle.co.uk's Tutorial
Mark's Pixel Art Tutorial
Pixelfreak's Isometric Pixel Art Tutorial
Using Photoshop to make a Pixel Art Shadow
Pixel Zone Tutorials
Fighter Sprite Tutorial @ Spriteart
Resources:
CityCreator.com - Awesome lego-like City building tool
The Captain N Sprite Forums
Software:
GraphicsGale
From Sawtooth:
Pixel Joint
Pixipedia, a pixel art wiki
Pixelopolis, a revival of the old (now long gone) pixelation forum
Ex Like Us, more or less the korean pixel scene (at least I think it's korean)
Various portfolios and whatnot.
Sprite Art, some tutorials and other stuff b st0ven
Gas 13, pixel artist (and some C64 demoscene stuff too)
Iso City, hosted by Kenneth Fejer
Pixeldam ( I strongly suggest you check out the graveyard in the lower right corner of Harlem Hills)
Final Redemption
Ptoing: The guy who is so graciously providing my webhosting and that of some other cool people:
1. My pixel art
2. Darion's pixel art (he's about a year and a half younger than me, I think)
3. Miascugh's pixel art
Josh Astorian's pixel art (he did a few things for Sigma Star Saga)
portfolio for Adam Tierney, did graphics that EGM went out of their way to hate ;_; He was also assistant director for Sigma Star Saga.
Henk motherucking Nieborg who is awesome and should not be disrespected.
Derek Yu made pixel art, although it's not on the site any more, all that's left is the stuff on the games he's made.
Flip Flop Flyin, home of the minipops and the 24 hour billy jean contest!
Paul Robertson and again. |

Great Tutorials. But there is one that i feel compeled to add cause it helped me alot in some work i've done:
http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/shtml/tutorials.shtml
some of the tutorials dont actualy... work... cause that page is realy oldy ^^;;
but the tutorials about "Selective outlining" and "Colouring techniques and shading" are realy great. the others i might add that they are interesting but i've found better ones on the links above posted by schild ^^
[edit] - hey, that avatar of yours... i've seen that peace of that artist, on a contemporanean art class... i realy didn't liked that particular work of him... the guy was incredible with his outfit, an all the imaginary world of him into reality (or partial) on that museum envoirement. but i still didn't liked at the end, but it sure was impressive. |

If I could merge threads, I'd just do that. Instead I'll probably just copy/paste it into the first post with all the other resources, if that's all right?
Since this forum is so small, I'd rather not have like half the topics on the page be sticky; it's not like any of the current threads are going anywhere at the moment. And there is one other one that I DO plan on stickying when I get back from work!
For now, though, let's just field suggestions in this thread till we get a good chunk of links and whatnot before I do anything! |

Don't Sticky when you can Wiki!
How about a development section on the insert credit wiki?
That would be a perfect place to list references, turorials and resources.

Anyone can feel free to add resources to the wiki at this point, especially sawtooth with all of his pixel art links. |

| I used photoshop with anti-alias off for all my pixel work....but its not necessarily the best solution, just the one I'm most comfortable with. |

i used paint shop pro for some of my older games and i'm not really happy with the results. i think part of it was the scale - i feel like it's easier to do tiny, detailed sprites in a dedicated pixel program. |

I think we had a thread like this awhile ago and I may or may not have posted a shitload of links.
If I find my post in that thread I'll re-post it, but for now I'll start off with this: pixel-arts.org. Mostly of interest will be the links at the bottom left. |

edit: so yeah, you could say this is one of my hobbies.
That's such a rip off of Derek's Accidental Video Game Porn archive. Too bad it's down (or maybe.... gone forever?)
Yeah, there it is. |

The result of four-to-five hours of oogling a naked Poser model. I still have much further to go with shading, though. |

| This thread makes me wish I was decent at visual arts.. Some really cool tutorials here, and none were like "Okay he sure can talk about it but his stuff sucks" I actually thought a lot of it looked hella professional. |

| I note that Danc of Lost Garden posted another free tile-set today. It's pretty gorgeous, if a little late-90s/early-00s in style. |

my first pixel-art enemy!
isn't he cute? ^-^
in-game the eyeballs and sockets are seperate layers and are drawn at a small offset in the direction of the player, so the eyes follow the player wherever s/he goes. |

that is pretty cool. is he boss or minion? i imagine a room full of the latter, all tracking the player, could be something unnerving, especially if it's not immediate; some eyes staring some eyes turning some glancing off to immenient danger not yet visible. strike one in one of his eyes and all his other eyes dart to the wound, all instinctual horror and anime shakes. then slowly, consciously, they refocus on you and narrow. |

sounds good! i think he'll be a minion indeed. the game's a shmup and currently at regular intervals each of these eyes shoots an aimed bullet (simultaniously) to get those cool Cave-like bullet circlets. even though it's a shmup, i'm planning to stick a room-based dungeon in there (my engine allows that) which will likely be crawling with these. |

Schild, add these to the opening post under software:
ProMotion
Wally
Both appear to be pretty handy for the pixel work. Promotion seems to be a rather professional suite for GBA game development. |

| ProMotion is really good; loads of useful features and shortcut keys. After trying a bunch of free programs I finally broke down and registered this Spring. Since then I use it for everything. |

See, I'd love to try it, but I'm afraid that I might like it too much, and there's just no way that I could ever afford something like that. It's a considerable investment, to be sure. |
