i wonder if an insertcredit 24-hour developathon would yield interesting results.
no, i don't wonder. i know.
I talked with Mokhir about the following in #IC:
Someone should make a quick Game Maker game that we pass around between insert credit designers for a week at a time. Each person can change anything they want, add anything they want and keep anything they want. The idea is you can either get a really well-refined game, or better yet, a complete joke of a game that keeps surprising people. Each week a compiled version is posted, and the source file is sent to the next person in line.
There could even be boundaries, like each person make a room in this game. Or each person make one enemy. That's all up for discussion.
I'm saying this here so you will tell me to make a thread about it.
I also support the 24-hour developathon, but that's hard to organize on a forum without a bit of good faith.

Sure thing. We can flesh out simple guidelines here.
There's the issue of dealing between people with registered and unregistered versions of Game Maker, for instance. It would be nice to not include functions that some can't utilize (or even see, as far as I know) in the free version of the software.
Also, an attempt should be made not to bog the game down with gratuitous scripts. If we keep it essentially the drag-and-drop functions, without too much of one object calling on another, it will remain workable. I don't think anyone want's to deconstruct a game for hours before changing a few things here and there. |

How about one in Game Maker and one in Multimedia Fusion.
Game Maker vs. Multimedia Fusion!
Game Maker just doesn't work properly on my computer. Aside from the fact that I'm not used to it like I am with the Clickteam softwares. |

Easily we could do something like this with art as a seperate thing. Someone starts a thread with a sprite of a character or object, and someone adds a related thing after that. And then it keeps going. See how far it gets removed by the time people get bored. We could even make a list of people to know what order people should post in...
Just a thought.
Could probably come up with an assload of assets for whatever if people devoted the time to it. |

I just (quickly) made a wonderfully simple (dumb, addictive) game that is perfect to get this project rolling. I won't make it available for download until we get a list of people willing to participate.

That's in Game Maker, yes? I'll do something quick in Fusion to get shit rolling.
That capture looks like an intriguing starting point... that 73 and the coin are creepy. |

Is fusion usable without buying a copy? I know GM has a free version.
Not a huge fan of GM or fusion, but it's always nice to get a fresh perspective on things. I'd be up for this, as long as it it fits with my schedule somewhat well. |

| i like it! are the rooms going to be static, and then you move from one room to the next, like in zelda? i have a great idea for sound if it were like that. i guess having sound guys work exclusively on the game for a week would kind of be counter-productive to the design. would the sound guys just be working on it continuously? or should any of the sound guys that want to work on it pair up with an actual designer? because i'm mostly an #ic guy, and that makes interaction much easier for me. |

What I envision is big match of game dev tennis. I'll serve up the first compiled game (and source file) soon, and the next person will "return" it (to the next in line) by changing it in any way they see fit.
The idea is to watch the game slowly evolve, the gameplay itself as well as its sights and sounds, though leaving a bit of what was there before.
I think if we each just created one room, that would mean less changes to gameplay, and would essentially have everyone designing add-on rooms for the first person's game (which may be fine for another project).
I say we just get started and see where this leads (if nothing else it will be good design/dev practice).

Since this is entirely unofficial, I see no harm at all in having you work on sound in the middle of the project. You can develop sound based on another's (or many others') design and physics, and then a week later, the next programmer or artist can design further based on your music.
If nobody has any objections (or time constraints), here's a tentative order (with no schedule yet):
KoD Game Maker Melee
1. vision
2. dessgeega
3. Mister Toups
4. Mokhir
5. Persona-sama
6. janus (either this or fusion)
7. NightsB
...
KoD Fusion Tactics
1. the blueberry hill
2. janus (this or game maker)
...

Good point. I';ve just rethought the game I was going to begin. The process reminds me of Wikipedia.

As for Multimedia Fusion, there's a 30 day trial with limits on saving exes. I won't talk about torrents or other pirate bunk in here.
Also, there's nothing to stop people working on the Game Maker, and the Fusion project. i might have to try and mess with the GM one if noone else uses MMF...
I'll try and have Bullet Hell Hockey League 2006 posted Monday or Tuesday, to win some of you over. |

| A really fun thing to do is put together a communal set of art assets, then have everyone make their own game using them. Alternatively, have everyone design a game around the same concept. |

I'm going to comment my code (and change one script to a drag-n-drop function, for anyone with a non-registered copy of gamemaker), then send the source file to dess for her turn. I wish her luck in turning this into something else. |

there are some good tutorials on the official site. i'm told they're outdated now, but they're what i learned from. "your first game" through "platform games" should give you a good idea of how game maker works, i think. |

I was quite distracted. The thing I was working on is just sitting near usable. I havn't been near MMF for weeks, maybe, but am likely to be home plenty this week. I only need a day or two more.
I stopped thinking about it -- it looked like no one else would be taking it up after me anyway But yes. PLEASE EXPECT BULLET HELL BULLDOG WARMLY |

I'm interested to see where this goes in the long long weeks before it reaches me. Also, there should be a drop that goes from the bottom of the screen to the top, so the bottom doesn't get quite so stupidly crowded. |

Smart changes! I'm glad you threw up such a nice menu screen (& icon) as well. The zombies don't... disappear, do they? I could swear they were all hiding together in one sprite at towards the end.
Also, extra points to the first person that makes this into a rhythm game. |

well, the menu screen is basically just there make sure the mouse is centered on screen when the game starts (and to provide a quickie goal and play instructions).
i'm pretty sure the zombies don't disappear, but i did up the rate at which mummies spawn by a lot. |

By business trip I mean I wasn't at home for two days because I had band practice in another city and so I just stayed at our singer's house so I wouldn't have to drive as much.

Sorry guys, I don't have the time for this. A MMF one seems pretty pointless anyway now. I hope I can finish the game, and just nicen it up myself.
