Welcome to a new and exciting concept in forum threads!

This is the quick question thread! It's basically where you post any questions that only have a small number of possible answers, so that you don't have to waste time creating a brand new thread for it, like that morrowind one from earlier! Questions that need answers, not discussion!

Questions that end up turning into discussions should be taken out and put in a thread of their own! Also, this thread should be stickied!

Also you can ignore this exciting and new concept and just answer the two quick questions I have!

QUESTION 1

Which was the first major arcade game to feature digitised speech?

QUESTION 2

Which was the first arcade game to feature scrolling in eight directions?

Thanks!

"Major" is subject to debate, but I'd say Space Fury (Sega, 1981). Actually the whole question needs to be more precise. Digitised as in playback of samples or digitised as in playback of phonemes by a speech processor? In the latter case Wizard of Wor (Midway, 1981) would be a likely answer.

QUESTION 2

Which was the first arcade game to feature scrolling in eight directions?

Thanks!

I don't know arcade, but I remember that the TMNT games had speech, and that impressed me a whole lot. I mean, in the B&W Game Boy ('pizza time')! Also in the NES ('cowabunga' and others.)

i dunno if Berzerk or Wizard Of Wor were very popular at the time. perhaps they were? but i don't suppose most people remember them too well now. if you want a game that many people do remember for its use of digital voice... i'd guess Sinistar (Williams, 1982) is an obvious one. 'course as Jeilong says, "major" is subjective, and the written histories of videogames can't help being sorta incomplete.

as for the candidates for "very first videogame to use digital voice": Stratovox (Taito, 1980)?

There is some controversy as to which video game first incorporated speech. Some have claimed Berzerk, others have voted for Wizard of Wor or even Gorf. It is likely that Stratovox is the actual holder of this dubious honor. The speech synthesis in this game was achieved by a 1.5 MHz chip which runs about half the speed of the Z80 chip that is the engine for the rest of the game. The voice is limited to four short and very distorted phrases. Even at the time, the result was a bit underwhelming.

Note that in the MAME version, the voice synthesis is not very good. Okay, if memory serves, it wasn't much to begin with.

Hey, so how about you play the game how it was intended to be played before you go stating your opinons on it, huh? Seriously, invest $10 in a PS2->USB converter or something.

That would be like playing Shadow of the Collosus with a steering wheel and complaining about it.

Or Guilty Gear with a Pop'n Music controller. I've tried this, and no it doesn't work nearly as well as Tetris on a DDR pad.

A pop'n music controller makes IIDX really interesting.

And fun! But only at easier levels. Pop'n DX. Really, you should give it a try.

Vice versa, however, does not work.

I actually played SotC with the Guitar Hero controller. If you hold the whammy bar just so you can steer the horse right, but only after you spend five minutes figuring out how to get on the horse.

I'm tired of this excuse from you. Get off your ass and get a job. Call back on the applications you--claim--to put in. Quite sucking the tit of the gaming community and be a viable option.

I found a link on Starmen.net: http://www.ngeb.net/mother3_gba_soundtrack.shtml

I don't think all the files are up yet, but mostly there. How nice. Ironically, I haven't seen any links to the GSF files for the game, which I would prefer due to space concerns. Then again, I haven't really looked.

Q #1: My copy of Nitendogs has locked up twice. And when playing Lost in Blue, my gf says that certain rooms she enters has messed up graphics, but when she exists and re-enters, its fixed. Plus once while tryint to start up the game, the system gave an error message.

Is the system borked, or are the games?

Q #2: What's the battery life on the DS anyhow? I heard 10 hours, but mine seems a bit shorter.

A1: the cart connectors can be fiddlier than they really should be. mine would tell me there was no game inserted about one in every five times (read: way too often) when i first got my DS, but they've since calmed down and i can't remember the last time i had a problem with it. your problem might just go away. trauma center locked up on me, once, but i was playing from the gba slot *ahem,* so, don't worry about it. the DS is just about the only system where you have the luxury of thinking that something is seriously wrong with the hardware after one lockup anyway.

QUICK QUESTION

Anyone ever play the rumble pack enabled versions of Mario 64 and Wave Race released in Japan? Apparently Wave Race went a bit over-board, but I'd love to play Mario with rumble pack. It would add so much more, you know! Create a truely cinematic experience!

My own question before some answers:

Lost in Blue: Can you get the water bottle back from the girl if you gave it to her? Also, is that how you fill the drum? I need to play more of the game.

NCSX has them also EStarland, although I can only vouch for NCSX.

Yes. Have you ever used a Japanese arcade cabinet? Just like that. Also the Green (US) Agetec Dreamcast controller is compairable. Unless I am thinking of something else. I got to test it at E3.

I ALMOST got Wave Race 64 Shindoo from Play-Asia a while ago, but someone beat me to it. :/ I want it because some tunes got remixed, and also keeping all of the differences between the Japanese and US versions.
