No audio on DracX: You get the FX and occasional music because it is hardware made sounds. I had the same problem when I was still using magic engine. I fixed it eventually somehow, but I don’t remember. I know that when I did I still had a ton of weird audio glitches afterwards. This spurred me to just get a PCE-duo. Have you tried HuGo yet?

I saw Monster Attack (EDF 1) on sale here for an... acceptable price by local standards, I'd say. Is it worth picking up?

I know EDF 2 is coming over here too, but it's been pushed back to February 2007 :(

I don't think Tekken 5 is as bad as you guys would like to think, but I can sorta see where you're coming from, since I like VF4 more and can see why it's a better game. Aside from Mokujin, though, who's sort of a throwaway and more interesting random select, every character has plenty distinguishing characteristics (despite how retarded they all look). The tekken movelists are quite bloated though, yeah.

Re: Strings - There is a logic to whether a given hit in a string hits high/mid/low, ends with a punishable move, etc. Generally, the following hit of a string will be used to beat certain moves if the first hit is blocked, or as a mix-up between mid or low gaurd. Strings usually end in an unsafe move to create a degree of risk between doing 1 or 2 or 3 hits or whatever, since the opponent has to guess whether you'll do the next hit after the previous hit connects.

I also agree that 3D fighters tend to have a serious lack of focus in their movelists. I think if the developers earmarked the key moves it would be much easier for a player to figure out the basic tactics for their character, then add flourishes with the more gimmicky/risky moves once they've mastered the fundamentals. Even in VF you use about 1/5th-1/3rd of your character's movelist most of the time.

On a related note, I was walking down the street the other day and once again the question popped into my head: what the fuck happened with Tekken 4?!?!

Fort: I don't think anyone knows. Every time it comes up amongst tekken players all I hear is "such and such character was just a giant fucking glitch!" and "they thought they could do anything with the engine". I mean, it turned out to be a 2-3 character game at high level play (Jin/Nina/Steve, I think). I wonder if there are some wacky videos floatin' around?

Just wondering, but the only way to change the color palette on the GBA SP is to hold a key combination upon activation? Or can I do it on the fly? That would be keen if so I won't have to needlessly reset the system to get the rihgt colors.

Nope! Also here is everything:

When playing an original Game Boy game on a later system, the user can choose which color palette is used. This is achieved by pressing certain button combinations while the Game Boy logo is displayed on the screen. It is also possible to use a monochromatic color scheme that preserves the original look of the game.

The palettes available for use when an original Game Boy game is played on a later Game Boy system are as follows:

Up: Brown
Up + A: Red
Up + B: Dark Brown
Down: Pastel Mix
Down + A: Orange
Down + B: Yellow
Left: Blue
Left + A: Dark Blue
Left + B: Monochrome (Original Colors)
Right: Green
Right + A: Dark Green (Default Palette)
Right + B: Inverted Monochrome
In addition, most Game Boy games published by Nintendo have a special palette that is enabled when no buttons are pressed. Any game that does not have a special palette will default to the Dark Green (Right + A) palette instead.

Monitor for TATE shooters on a budget?

Ok, these aren't quick...

anyways, good "monitor"? Like VGA PC montitor? Just get one and then turn it the right direction [i]while it is off and has been unplugged for at least 15 minutes[/url]. If it is a TV you want do the same thing, though flat tube is recommended.

VGA cables for the GC? No. You would have to get some kind of converter, either through component or composite. That's going to run you about $75 on the lowest end, to $250 for "quality," yet still not the highest end.

As you can see, the best option is to get a flat tube SDTV with S-Video inputs. It won't look absolutly amazing, but it will look very, very good. You can get what ever one you want for your budget, and if you are really going to use both systems for this rig, go with a tube TV and get S-Video cables for both systems.

If you have a VGA box for the DC and a spare SVideo cable then you will only need to get an S-Video cord for the GC (like $15-$30) and the TV which will run you anywhere from $100 - $200. Something like this would be perfect, it has S-Video and component input for the best possible SDTV image, and the speakers won't make the TV impossible to stand on it's side.

The whole rig will probably run you $150 - $300 depending on how many cables you have to buy, and what size TV you want. That's not too bad if you're putting together a dedicated item that is just for vert shmups. I built a whole damn cabinet for them, it was fun, but I don't have the amount of selection you will.

Though, if you really wanted to go all out you should get a JAMMA arcade cabinet and a DC->JAMMA box, then it would be perfect/amazing. Alternatly get an arcade cabinet, gut it, place the TV in it (remove the plastic casing and mount it), connect it as stated above, then get some customly wired controllers and some dedicated machines, and then connect it all up with the coin return box as the access point to it all. Ok, so it sound s much more complicated than it is, the main problem would just be that it's expensive.

What difference does a digital comb filter make in the image quality?

I have a sort-of cheap 20" Sanyo I bought about two years ago that has component-in video, and while it's a very noticeable step up from standard composite cables, I'm not sure I'm getting the full quality component video is supposed to offer.

That's because it's an SDTV. They only get so clear before there really isn't anything more you can do. If you're noticing these things and still want to step things up (and you have the cash) go up to hdtv. Then you can start tweaking the quality again and again until you get it about as good as you can, in which case you may still not be happy. But yeah, I don't think a "digital comb filter" does too much aside from sell people on a bit of technology that they don't really need.

The screen won't show at all unless you've got the component cables plugged in.

Also, you have to change a few settings on the system options (TV Output Colour/Color from "RGB" (or whatever it says on the US/Jap machines) to "Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr").

I got one in this boxset, but the HDTV kit feature didn't work because I'd modded the machine (boo). Apparently, it looks quite good, and the games don't suffer any hardware issues in the process. Summarised info from book:

- instead of outputting odd/even lines on seperate frames (SD), the whole image is output every frame (at no cost of performance in the games). 448 lines for NTSC, 512 for PAL.
- no additional hardware used, other than the component cable bundled. A VGA adapter is available somewhere on the site linked above.
- some games may appear stretched and distorted, but all games will display (I think) through the cable, supported or not.
- no interpolation/added pixels. No artefacts or combing (note: I have no idea what some of these things mean)
- works with most PS2 games (apparently 95%).

Looking for the name of a (mac only?) shareware game from the early 90s. The game was black and white and had you as a blimp floating over a pit like the flying saucer of Space Invaders over a full Tetris board. The pit started out filled with blocks that would explode/earn points/release monsters when you dropped bombs on them. I think the goal was to rescue people trapped in the blocks without letting the monsters get to them. Also if you bombed your way down to the bottom and hit the ground then you would release burried radioactive waste that would float up and kill you.

I've been scritch-scratching my head about this doozy:

Okay, so I got my 360 sitting back at home and I got a fair load of XBLA games on the HDD. There's a 360 at my dorm, so I bring my HDD over. I pop in my HDD, boot the 360, log in my profile, and I'll be damned, my XBLA games say "TRIAL" on the title screens.

I lug the damn 360 upstairs, get on Live, and my games say Trial for a split second before unlocking themselves. I also downloaded Lumines.

I turn it off, get it back downstairs and what the shit. My games offline, except for Lumines, don't work again.

I bring my HDD home over the weekend. All the games that I originally downloaded on my 360 work offline. This means Lumines doesn't work.

Are offline XBLA games bound to machines? If so, that really fucking sucks.

I havent fired up my 360 in about a week or so, right before the firmware updates.

I updated them tonight and well, um. . . it doesn't work now.
Just a black screen.
Has this happened to anyone else?

I have a buyer's protection plan from Gamestop, so i'm not all that worried if it's fucked.

I keep hearing about GBA/DS flash carts, and I'm pretty interested. Does someone smart want to tell me:

Which ones are good and what sites are best to buy them on?

How much do they cost?

What kind of emulation can they handle?

Does emulation run smoothly on them?

I'm not all that interested in home brew shit, I just want to be able to play NES/SNES/Genesis games on the go, and I don't really feel like getting a PSP.
