| Are there PSX emulators that work just off a game disc, without needing ROMs or ISOs or BIOSes or whatever? |

the xbox PAL version of SFII anniversary has SFIII, but the ps2 version doesn't.
thew only reason i can think of that a non-european would want to play PAL ps2 games, is the d3/505 gamestreet ones, and they all have a 60hz mode.
ps1 memory cards are really, really common in england (but that's no help to you)
here's a question: when i start seeing 2001-style monoliths in various locations in panic! (on mega cd), does it mean i'm near the end of the game? |

It plays 'em all right, but at 2x speed. Is there some kind of 'Whoa, slow down' button in the ePSXe config menu? |

i would say not nearly as good as it could have been. i'm admittedly harsh on that game, if only because in the hunt is one of my favorite ps1 shootemups. my bitching and moaning aside, it's certainly good fun for nine dollars or less.

i have had the best luck at gamecrazy. every so often they have an official memory card among all the third party ones, and they will be carrying playstation stuff for some time to come unlike gamestop/eb. |

If you don't mind buying third party, half.com has tons of new ones for $2-3. |

| I'm having trouble remembering a specific mac shareware turn-based strategy game I played in the early 90s, though it probably came out in the late 80's. It had a very simple, one-screen map,(in color btw) with a desert backdrop, and you could either play against the (very stupid) computer ai or against a friend. You had a few different types of units, and they were all lined up in an organized row, sorta like a chess game. It was also very generic, and probably set in the present day, or at least 20th century. Sadly, mac underdogs is down, so this knowledge will gnaw at my brain forever. |

Should I buy a Dreamcast for 30$? Considering it's second hand, has no VM (albeit i may find a couple of them new), and only one controller?
I mean, I really like Sega, but I always considered the DC a boring, underpowered machine kept alive by shooter zealots and waiwai japan people. Is my conception wrong? |

XA only AFAIR.
There's an OST with both the Arcade and PSX tracks (http://gmronline.com/info.asp?CatNumber=WSCA-00001), available on VGMCentral and some GamingForce FTPs.
If the arcade tracks are enough for you, the MAME roms are handled both by M1 and Hoot - I recommend the latter, as it handles the Namco Arcade games much better (http://www.snesmusic.org/hoot). Much smaller this way.[/url] |

Can I use DDR-controller-"pads" for other games?
If so, where can I find one/two cheap and new?
There would be a game I really want to play with that kind of pad ....

Ok, you need to know a little more about PAL games. Standard PAL resolution is 50hz, where standard NTSC is 60hz. Euro is slowly moving over to have 60hz standard for stuff (someone from EU can probably explain better) so many many PS2 games work as an import if they have a 60hz option (which is usually the case if the game was also released widely in JP).
It depends on the console and publisher if games support 60Hz ... PS2-games rarely do so, like FFX or GT4 is 50Hz only.
IREM-games, however, tend to support 60Hz, and so does Sub Rebellion. Tested it some moments ago and it offers a 60Hz-mode. |

I don't know if it works, since you need L/R1/2-buttons, but I would love to play R-TYPE FINAL with it. And DDR as well, kind of. |

To be honest, Europe is not moving to 60Hz. Even European HDTV protocols support 50Hz progressive video - albeit they do support 60Hz as well.
However, due to design implementations, most digital(ie since the early 90's) european TV sets will display a 60Hz image without problems, albeit most low end models dislike NTSC color format and run stuff in black and white, creating a need for what is called a PAL60 signal. At any chance, a PS2 game with a mode selector will always output NTSC video at 60Hz. |

Since I'm an absolute imbecile when it comes to such things, if someone could PLEASE grab me a copy of this (been looking for music from the game for about forever now), I would be eternally grateful. |

| Not game related, but this is both a question and quick: What's a decent .gif editor that I could use that is both easy and fun? Also, it pretty much needs to be free, or easily hackable. I've had very little luck in the .gif editor world. |

I've only played 2, but I love it, and it's $10 new.
You also have to know, going into it, that it has the absolutely WORST translations and voice acting EVAR. Which can be a good and very entertaining thing.

How's Shapeshifter on the PC-Engine/Duo? It looked pretty cool, and some guy gave it a nice review, but I trust your tastes more than I do some stranger's.
Also, Kazu, if you're wondering which of those 4 games is a worthwhile purchase, I'd snatch up Twinkle Star Sprites. There's probably a ROM somewhere if you really want to try it out. |

Actually, it's the sequel to Twinklestar Sprites, although playing the original would certainly give you an idea of its gameplay. |
