I listen to game soundtracks often, usually not in the context of the actual game. I know that a lot of you do as well. This is a thread for the discussion of videogame soundtracks and everything related to them.
Also, because it fits in with this topic:
I'm relatively inexperienced when it comes to soundtracks, what are some of the 'best' soundtracks available? |

Myth: Total Soundtrack
The CD covers Myth 1 and 2 as well as the opening theme to Halo. The Myth games have always had some of the best music, not to mention the best narrations. |

It's nigh impossible to find it, but The Neverhood had an amazing soundtrack.
And, almost goes without saying, Katamari Damacy. |

You guys surely know which camouflage is unlocked with the purchase/use of the most recent MGS3 soundtrack (this one), right? I'm thinking about buying it and wondering what exactly I'm getting. The ending theme (Starsailor-Way to Fall) and the Harry Gregson Williams main theme merit a purchase alone. Plus, Snake Eater is fun to sing along to when I'm REALLY feeling like a loser. Actually, I just finished this game up a couple of days ago. It was...so Kojima. And incredible. (I could go into detail, but I won't)

Personally, I find the Dangun Feveron OST to be quite...groovy. |

Lords of Thunder
The Sega CD version, specifically. Go download some samples if you've never heard it before.
I'll make a giant post later, when I'm not so tired.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you just said. Wrote. Did you know that Tappy (the original music guy from MGS1) actually created the main theme from MGS2? Apparently, Harry Gregson Williams just mixed it or something. That theme was used in MGS3 also. It is such a fantastic piece that fits the mood of the games perfectly. |

The Original Mother 2 soundtrack has been absent from eBay for a few weeks and I desperately need to hear those sounds NOW.
If anyone knows of someone selling the OST, or is able to furnish me with said sounds on a more immediate basis, please let me know. |

I didn't know that! Either way, the score is incredible and perfectly fitting--no matter who wrote it. You know what was cool? (Spoilers?) When you entered Granin's room at Graniny Gorki and the theme was playing on the radio. Brilliant. Also. The ladder. Yeah. SHIT. That makes me want to play the damn game. On a semi-related note, I kind of want to get Starsailor's "Love is Here" on vinyl, but until I can find a decent preamp, this might have to do.
What about anything composed by Yuzo Koshiro? Classic.
Can I succumb to stereotype and mention Rez, also? Please? |

Tekken soundtracks. Not the greatest fighting games but hey there's some damn good music to be heard.
Tekken Tag is very experimental and features some absolutely awesome tracks(Eddy's theme for one)
Tekken 4 has a sort of a Jazz/Big Band feel to it. Personal favorites are the jungle theme, Touch & Go(Airport), and I dunno everything else.
Tekken 5 just throws out a bunch of other stuff.
I listen to all three soundtracks regularly out on the road(And if you have a job in Pizza Delivery you need as much variety as possible).
The Sega CD version of Lords of Thunder has some of the best Opera Metal around. I don't even know what that means but it's awesome.
If you can find a good quality rip of it..check out the PC Engine CD version of Super Darius 2. It's essentially the music of Darius 2 only remade in brilliant CD quality. While you're at it check out Darius Gaiden and G. Darius..neither game has the most popular soundtracks but if you want to try something new these are two of my favorites.
Gradius V had my favorite videogame soundtrack of 2004. It's not Radiant Silvergun(Though it is Sakimoto) as much as it is a techno/classical combustion that combines classic Gradius themes with a bunch of original stuff.. It's all good. If you want more traditional Gradius music check out Gradius Gaiden..great as well
Speaking of..Get FFT, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Orta.
Though it's stretching it a bit Sega's Initial D game is the undisputed king of Eurobeat(even if it is all ripped from the original anime). Surprisingly this stuff sounds good while doing 80 on Florida's toll roads. |

| My favorite has always been KOF'95 AST. I think the best Tekken soundtrack ever was in 2. #3 was mostly guitar rock, 4 was experimental as you mentioned. 5 comes in 2nd place. |

R-TYPE FINAL - Yuki Iwai did a real good job there
FFCC - Kumi Tanioka's first big soundtrack.
Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean 2+3, Tales of Symphonia (motoi-san!) - awesome soundtracks
REZ and Katamari Damacy - no comment.
Chaos Field - listen & feel why.
but which one did i like best, humm ... it's ever so hard to decide, i can't make up my mind... |

Silent Hill 1 - Still Yamaoka's best soundtrack.

Silent Hill 2
Valkyrie Profile
Ikaruga (Oh yes!) |

I hate to go lazy with the lists. (some are easiler to find that others)...
Katamari 1
Mario & Zelda Big Band Live
Lumines
Rez
Gradius V
Ridge Racer 4
Ridge Racer V Official Bootleg
Tekken 3 (any flavor)
Tekken 2 (any flavor, and there's lots of them too)
Radiant Silvergun (another reason why I believe it tops Ikaruga)
Dracula X
NiGHTS
Mega Man 3 (yeah 2 is awesome and all, but...)
Ducktales |

Ever plug Megaman 2 into a Game Genie? On the copy that I had, anyway, even if you didn't enter a code, the music would get brutally raped. To this day, awful, screechy, broken music is all that I'm able to associate with Megaman. |

That, you see, is everything Rob Hubbard ever did for the Commodore 64. Just... download anything. Any single one of them and you will be pleased. If you want a recommendation, the standard fan favorites are, I think, Crazy Comets, Commando, and Monty on the Run. I suggest you just get everything. It's not like the files are big. |

Well, shit... I might as well cross post some older stuff.
Silent Hill 2 got me into video game soundtracks. Most of the time I just thought of it in a passing manner. Occasionally a nice remix would pop up from location to location and I would download it, but before SH2 I pretty much ignored them (especially after 8-bit days).
As of late I have gone beyond that and looked at the many different angles of soundtracks and have been paying attention to them more in games. It adds a layer that I often times ignored.
Castlevania is what I have been looking at in volume lately. I have about 8 different albums right now, although 2 are unofficial. I found that Castlevania Dungeon has most of the soundtracks for download but they are using file planet, so screw that. I am slowly finding more all the time though.
Without ever playing Mother 1 and 2 a friend helped me with the soundtracks for them and the pop vocal versions of them. They were really great stuff, especially the OSTs. They inspired me to seek out and play Mother 1 (although I probably won't ever finish it) and will be moving on to Earthbound next month (hopefully).
Metroid also has some good stuff. Metroid Metal is an excellent site for some nice guitar/metal versions of metroid themes and songs. They also have one of the best designs for a video game t-shirt I have ever seen.
Since then I have gotten Namco X Capcom, and Killer 7 soundtracks (well they are in the mail) so I can post more on that later. I also have almost all of the Castlevania soundtracks now (missing Aria of Sorrow and the N64 games... although I don't want the N64 ones. I also must say that while ICO does not scream out killer soundtrack reflecting back on it, listening to it I realise that it was a great ambient soundtrack.
Hmmm... perhaps I will take all of the soundtracks that I have and review them or at least write up little blurbs. |

Yasunori Mitsuda did an amazing job with the Chrono Cross soundtrack. Every once in a while I pop the CD into my computer and let it play all the way through. Same with the Symphony of the Night soundtrack!
CVS2 has some funkyness in it's music. Once in a while you need some funkyness in your life, just once in a while. |

No talk of the Vagrant Story soundtrack? The music for the opening gameplay is just brilliant.
I have two copies of Radiant Silvergun and Panzer Dragoon RPG's OSTs. So different and equally fantastic.
And while I'm not a big Jet Set Radio OST fan, but Sneakman makes it onto most of my driving mix cds.
A VERY guilty pleasure is the Eurocom Super Street Fighter II Turbo red book audio. It's so... EURO!
Oh. And tetrisphere. Because Voss is awesome. |

you know that gradius-medley from gas? it's about 7mbyte and a very nice collection of gradius-themes you'll be sure to whistle for moths. strongly advise you to get that one.
forgot to mention FFIV all along the way, it has (maybe because it was my first FF) the nicest arranged prelude of all the FF's (imo). and the battle themes ... is it just me or is there anyone out there who also likes some of the FFIV-tracks as well? (say, "Golbez, Clad in dark" or the all-too-good "into the dark") |

REZ
N2O
Wip3out's original tracks
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Beavis and Butthead (GWAR rules)
Rollcage Stage 2
This is completely subjective, as I'm partial to soundtracks by commercial producers than those that do work soley for games.
Last time I ran into Freeland I tried talking to him about his work on REZ, but he didn't remember much of it and I was hammered. |

The Snatcher/Policenauts Black Disc CD can be found at http://www.segaxtreme.net under Misc Soundtracks. It is wonderful.
The remix of Beyond the Bounds by Mitsuto Suzuki/Sana on the ZOE2 OST is also very agreeable.

The whole one analog stick thing may have made that more difficult than I first imagined. The idea, though. The idea. I could see it being one of those games someone with a brain at Sega was secretly tinkering with in the basement, hiding the design document and prototypes under the couch, hoping that a drunk Yuji Naka didn't stumble home one day, find it, and tear the place apart in a fit of rage.
Maybe that's where the idea of the King came from? |

I think that the Arkanoid and Wizball theme songs (both by Martin Galway, Commodore 64, btw get sidplayer for 'em) are absolutely essential. Get 'em on the HVSC top 100 page.
Earthbound has my favorite soundtrack ever.
Katamari Damancy's soundtrack also has quite a few good songs.
Oh, and Cave Story. Yes.
I'll second the megaman 2 over here. One of my favorite soundtracks for the nes.
I enjoy Animal Crossing's field bgm immensely. I'm not really fond of the totakeke tracks just because they're just imitations of popular genres, and can't really stand out on their own. I just like the background music because it's light, airy, and is nice to listen to after some particularly dense/noisy music. |

Despite the fact most of the music falls into a single definable genre ("quirky"), it actually covers an interesting range of styles. I too think of the whole soundtrack as one general blob of strangeness, but there's a world of difference between the slow and somber Klaymen's Theme, the cinematic Battle of Robot Bil, the meandering Skat Radio, and the completely insane Neverhood Theme.
....
don't ask, it's a fetish of mine. |

At first I was going to advise you to troll through some FTPS or the VGM DC++ hub that spawned somewhat from Soundtrack Central, but it appears there are ways to purchase it in a legimate manner (link to several other relevant links) |
