Also, for as long as I've known Tim he's pretty much liked every game/piece of hardware that he's come across. It's hard for me to take any of these viral marketing accusations seriously because I have a hard time imagining him saying bad things about nearly any thing that isn't kingdom hearts.

Tim Rogers gotta leather jacket but he can't rock
Got a fictional girlfriend And no cock
Post-modern sex life in the fifth dimension
All timmy craves is attention

All it needs is someone to mutilate the same chord while looking meek and singing it over and and over while a man politely hits drums like they might hit back if he plays too hard and you have the feelgood hit of the youtube summer, homes.

Yeah, they did that.

I guess Carless wants them to do it on every column?

I challenge him to start disclosing at the top of every blog post he writes "DISCLOSURE: SIMON CARLESS, WHO WROTE THE BELOW WORDS, WHO WILL USE 'US' AND 'WE' EVEN THOUGH HE'S TALKING ABOUT HIMSELF, IS GETTING PAID TO DO THIS, AND PROBABLY FEELS A LITTLE GUILTY."

Well, two things:

1) I would imagine the most likely scenario is that he's only read a few of your columns and never saw those columns where you make mention of it in particular.

2) Either way I don't think his stance is all that unreasonable, though I guess I can't blame you for getting pissed off about it. Were I in your position I'd probably feel the same way.

I don't think it's too much to ask that next-gen to put a brief blurb at the end of your article saying "Tim Rogers is a freelance journalist who works for sony" or something like that.

The larger point of whether or not it matters is up for debate. I'm inclined to think that it only matters if you're interested in holding up the veneer that videogame journalists are anything more than PR-spewing industry lapdogs.

Yeah, the phrases "Tim Rogers" and "journalistic integrity" go together about as well as "penis" and "meat grinder."

Funny story--in high school, we decided that the word "fucker" had lost its impact, so we devised a new insult that could only be used on the most vile of people.

That was "chode hopper"--the "hopper" part refers to a meat hopper. You know how you can imitate the sound of machinery by making that "erreererererererer" sound, and you can feel your teeth vibrate? Well, a "chode hopper" is a man who, in the process of sucking another man's dick, suddenly bites down hard and makes that noise, and then begins grinding his teeth.

I don't believe I have had a strong enough emotion near a human being to use "chode hopper" as of yet, but I theorize the buildup from the insult will cause a catatrophic tear in the Earth's time/space field. If you wake up one day and there's a dinosaur sleeping next to you, and for some reason you're now Dennis Hopper with that scallop-potato hair he had in Super Mario Bros., then you'll know that someone dropped the "chode hopper" bomb.

Also, one time I won a bet and, for halloween, can force that person to cosplay as Frieza, Tim Rogers. I have been tempted to use this power before, but I'm saving it for an appropriate moment--it wouldn't be any good to take a picture when they're still a kid. Like the Moogle Vestal picture, I want this to be something the person will be ashamed of for the rest of their lives.

Also, hi Tim. Sup?

Okay -- you want my absolute fucking bottom-line opinion?

. . . I don't want people to know I work for whoever I work for because people have been programmed to just automatically let that color their opinion. And that gets annoying. I start getting accusatory emails. What they're actually accusing me of, I don't know.

My frustration with Carless had nothing to do with work policies or journalistic frustration; it had to do with his buried assumption that having a job where I have a job is what makes my writing worth publishing in the first place. He talks about being a "games industry" person who somehow got into journalism. I guess I'm a "writer" who got into the "games industry."

I don't plan on staying at this (part-time) job much longer, anyway.

Also, I translated this manga.

It comes out on the 28th. Please go read it. It's really good. That's why I picked it for translation.

Well, yeah. Like I said, I'm sympathetic. As you say, it's annoying -- but that's all it is, annoying. You have confidence in your own integrity, so it shouldn't matter what people accuse you of. It's just bitches bitching, as you'd say.

Hell, man.

Journalism is kind of screwed up, as a concept. There's this assumption that journalists, who number in the thousands and are human beings, are able to make this invisible line between "reporting only the facts" and "here is my honest opinion." And, of course, the only thing that keeps this policy in place is journalists pointing and snickering at other journalists when they take a misstep.

But people believe that this line exists, and that there is a huge difference between normal human beings and journalists. So nowadays you can't even have a proper discussion, anymore, since one side is getting their "facts" from an impartial journalist, and is doing combat with another side whose "facts" came from another impartial journalist, and when the "facts" don't seem to match up, instead of going "hey maybe we don't have the facts" they just kind of shake their fists at each other.

Because magical fairies named "Journalists" supplied these facts, and because questioning where this information came from is boring, the art of argument has quickly turned from "I would like this to happen, and based upon this data I believe we should take this course of action" to "AHA I HAVE CAUGHT YOU IN A TRAP OF SEMANTICS, ERGO I WIN."

What "journalism" has really done is changed how people view ideas. There's no respect for ideas, anymore. You have to have an expert interviewed by a journalist for any idea to count.

"People who work for a company are influenced by the positive atmosphere or corporate culture to hold a more positive view of that company than they would otherwise, thus possibly influencing their opinions on other matters"

Evaluation: Possible. It is true that once people see what the inner workings of a Big Scary Company are like (assuming the inner workings are not actually Big and Scary, and they generally aren't), they are necessarily less likely to go along with crazy, stupid conspiracy theories about those companies. More importantly, these people might also be less likely to treat criticism of that company or their products objectively, or to view their products/services in the same light that they would if they had never seen what they were like Up Close(tm). This is generally the argument behind "if you work for X, we can't be sure you're being neutral about X"; whether or not it applies to this particular scenario ("you, and what you write"), it has merit as a general argument.

Opinion: All journalists have bias. Video game journalists aren't real journalists (in the same sense that sanitation engineers aren't real engineers), so they will probably be pretty unprofessional about their biases, too. Viewing corporate atmosphere firsthand factors less strongly into opinions about that company than good old-fashioned fanboyism (present in plenty of people who aren't employed by anyone at all, much less the companies they support) and personal experience (see previous thing in parentheses). It's still an ethical issue, though, and you can't really dodge it by saying you personally don't think it's relevant. Also, if you don't go with total disclosure, you look like you have something to hide (which you personally think you do, I guess), and that makes people suspicious.

When you decide not to mention your current employer, you let your columns at the risk of being attacked through this single point alone. The idea being, it's a lot more devastating to learn about that particular fact from a ranting critic than from the horse's mouth.

You might not care about that. And in any case if your other employer's (next-gen) is fine with that, well it's their full responsability.

Thing is we have to treat all journalism cynically. Now that just about anybody's a journalist, I'm not optimistic about human interactions on the net.

Disclaimer: I bought games as a consequence of reading largeprimenumbers.
