Okay, so, I want to make sure I have this thread progression right:
1. Discussion begins about how Video Fenky is gone.
2. Someone mentions that Kevin Gifford, Video Fenky's webmaster, does articles for GameSetWatch.
3. Tim makes a post saying that Kevin Gifford is an asshole based on an (apparent) lie he told in a thread at the Something Awful forums, then expands that to insulting GameSetWatch and its main editor, Simon Carless, for no conceivable reason other than his (publishing standard) use of "we" instead of "I" on a corporate website, then he says something vague and Writerly about ankle biters.
4. Nobody knows what Tim is talking about.
5. Tim elaborates, and mentions wanting to physically harm Simon Carless based on a non-demanding letter he privately sent about a very reasonable conflict of interest concern, failing to mention that said letter was in response to Tim asking that he not be described as "Sony's Tim Rogers," a description which was removed entirely for no conceivable reason other than "I like Tim."
6. Someone dares suggest that Simon had a point.
7. Tim gets very angry and has a fit, and again brings up that Simon's blogging style uses "we" instead of "I," which for some unexplained reason is "evil" and is apparently, in his mind, a good defense against being called out over breaking journalistic ethos.
8. Name calling.
9. People plug fingers in ears and say "LALALA VIDEO GAME JOURNALISM IS A JOKE," which is Insert Credit Forums Solution To Everything #1.
10. Tim starts his "I'm lying...or am I?" schtick, Insert Credit Forums Solution To Everything #2.
11. Posts get shorter and more irrational, relying heavily on obscured something awful forum internet catchphrases such as "itt," because everyone knows that saying the same funny thing repeatedly makes it funnier (just like saying "there is no video game journalism" over and over makes it true).
That's about it, right?
I agree with Simon. Your position, part-time status and plans to potentially leave Sony don't matter, you're being paid to publish an opinion column that directly speaks about Sony products while working at Sony, without disclosing that information, which is a conflict of interest, whether or not you want to believe that there is such a thing as journalistic ethos in video game-related reporting. And furthermore, you're sending emails trying to cover that information up when someone mentions it. And rather than keeping this argument private, you're making it public in the middle of an entirely unrelated thread.
Do you want to punch me in the face too?

I do believe I also said that "evil" was "oversaying it."
As for wanting to "cover the information up" -- that's kind of an iffy way to describe it. The information has no relevance to the story.
See, I didn't want to get into all of this:
1. Simon wrote a story about something said by someone Japanese.
2. The words said were in Japanese.
3. The person who translated the words was me.
4. The medium that ran the original words was a magazine (Famitsu) that I have no professional connection to.
5. The medium that ran my translation of the words was a website I write freelance articles for.
6. I write these articles as a person who is reading Japanese news and recording my thoughts as they happen.
7. The person who spoke the words that were recorded in the magazine that I translated for the website happens to work for the same company I work for, albeit in a vastly different context.
8. So, Simon sees my translation and, knowing that I work for this company, doubts it? He thinks I make it look hipper or cooler or smarter than it really was?
9. He decides that because his journalistic integrity tells him there must be a conflict of interest, he'd better insert an indicator of his doubt into the article? So he puts the name of my company before my name.
So the final question is not why put my name on there, it's why run the story at all if you have doubts about its integrity?
That's my serious question.
It's one (good) thing to have journalistic integrity, and it's another thing to wish everyone else did, too. It's a third thing, however, to email the editor of a rival publication with ethics tips. What was he trying to do? Get me fired? I made a simple request to take my name out of the story (he didn't even link my column, anyway, which was indeed for the best).
Would his whole journalistic empire collapse in on itself if the world knew he tried to coach a rival publication?! Is that not some kind of conflict of interest?!?!?!?!
So if the name of my company was relevant to the story, which consisted of a single sentence translated from a magazine, it clearly illustrates the writer of the story's doubt that the translation was accurate. In this ethical model, translating the words of a person at your company as they appeared in a story is, in and of itself, a bigger crime than it would be to just completely falsify information?
What a god damn boring thing to quote in a story, anyway!! I would much rather he quote the part about how Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
"disappoints me, even though I haven't played it. It disappoints me because of its title. 'Advanced Warfighter. Here, I'd thought, that when the future comes and war has truly advanced, wars would be danced, not fought."
. . .
I'm being silly, yes. I hate having to explain that every time.
I was a little more content just letting the people in this thread think I completely nuts. Damn it! |

I'll try to go to TGS, but I'll have to find a good excuse to make them pay me for it, since I'm entirely useless in Japan. This suit makes me look skinny though, I'm gonna keep it for now.
Anyway, I didn't know the exact situation before, and I'm not personally involved, but my take is like this: Simon didn't approve of your writing a column without disclosing that you work for Sony, in general, and he never has. I don't think this specific post had anything to do with it, and hell, I'm not even sure describing you as "Sony's" was meant to be malicious or not, it could have been entirely subconscious. I mean, posting news all day, at least our kind of news, it just becomes mechanized. You always accredit someone.
Regardless of his intent, you wanted the description removed, and it was...without Simon's permission. And I think that's why he got angry: something he wrote was edited without his knowledge or involvement, for reasons that he doesn't agree with, simply because you're our friend. No, he wasn't trying to get you fired, believe it or not he likes you quite a bit. But as you said, Next Gen is a competing publication, and something he wrote was edited to protect his competitor's image and, well, that would get me kind of peeved too.
I mean, really, his problem isn't with you at all, it's with his main competitor for publishing an opinion column that occasionally relates to Sony products, written by someone who works for Sony, and not disclosing that information. And, well, I share that opinion, despite considering you a friend. Sorry. It's nothing personal.
EDIT: I should clarify that I have no opinion either way of whether or not he was "right" for crediting you as a Sony employee, I'm going to stay out of that argument entirely. |

Frank Cifaldi. I think we've met. I created Lost Levels, and currently work at Gamasutra. I had an account here with my normal internet name, TheRedEye, but it hasn't worked since the server move/crash/whatever happened. |

I can accept that it was subconscious!!
Still, for a journalist conscientious enough to turn all his "I"s into "We"s, he shouldn't let such subconscious little whims get to him!!
If he's going to do such little subconscious things, he's going to have to start asking every interview candidate what their favorite beverage is, or what they dreamed about last night!
Let's get fluffy!!
cifaldi wrote:

Oh, he would rather tarnish their image? I thought winning in the war of journalism was accomplished through simply providing better, no-nonsense information?
cifaldi wrote:

See, how do you know I do work where you think I work?
Let me tell you, here, our compliance policy works in the following way:
If you're in management, you're either allowed to speak on behalf of the company, or you're not. You will know which one is the case because of who you are.
If you're in PR/advertisement, you are allowed to speak on behalf of the company.
If you're in R&D / development, you're allowed to say whatever the hell you want.
If you're in neither management nor PR nor development, you fall into one of two types:
A. Those with company business cards
B. Those without company business cards
Type A is expected to sit with perfect posture and never navigate away from their Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.
Type B is considered "freelance." Type B includes document translation people like me and several noble men from Japanese videogame magazines.
We do not have company business cards because we are not judged as deserving of them. We are "outsiders." I am allowed to wear my leather jacket and torn jeans into the building. I carry a "guest" key card. I don't even have to show up if I don't want to. If they "need" me for something, they call me.
To say I am an "employee" here is like calling a hospital janitor a doctor.
I don't represent my company, and they don't represent me.
Therefore, my disclosing that I "work" for this company would be like Brandon being forced to disclose he "works" for Mastiff Games at the top of every article he writes.
So, if removing the description from Simon's article was "against his intent," well, that's too bad, though I think he should be grateful that it also made his article more fucking correct. |

Well, okay. If you're a contract worker (which it doesn't sound like you technically are, but close enough), I wouldn't consider you employed by Sony at all, and I have no problem with you not disclosing that. Sounds to me like it was all a big misunderstanding, sorry for assuming things!
Other than that it's all between you and Simon. I really, really don't think he was trying to get you in trouble, though. |

I wonder how this all will turn out. I think everyone involved would do well throwing his head back, uttering a gutteral "bleauuuuuhhh!", quivering his shoulders, and violently shaking his hands at the writsts, then moving on to more pressing matters.

Well, that can be arranged easily enough.
Alright, so, we got to watch Tim's brain melt and observe the action as the scent of blood quickly drew the hyena pack to the scene and extend the thread another three pages.
Sounds good, let's pinch it here. Thread over. |
