How can you make a movie about running errands and digging up dinosaur bones?
I dunno, maybe I just didn't play enough of the game, but I tried Wide World on the DS for an hour or two and it really just rubbed me the wrong way. It just seemed to tell me, "You're now in a crazy amount of debt. Here are a bunch of pointless, time-wasting errands won't really make much of a dent in that debt, but may make you feel better better about yourself for trying to pay it off. Have fun!" |

so apparently Level 5 is developing an SRPG that, story-wise, is sort of a silly version of Joan of Arc. and it's coming out for PSP.
here are some scans. it looks...pretty damn nice.
what's with the historical fiction RPGs? |

japanese dude 1: we need an idea for an srpg with a story
japanese dude 2: we need to make a game with a main character our audience can jack off to while pretending to be better than everyone else who does the same thing
I'm pretty sure how this works. This doesn't look like a level 5 game, though I think that this might be on purpose: Level 5 has always had that very Level 5 look to it, even with a property they didn't own (DQ8) and now they're trying to diversify, even if just a little. It's still probably the second original PSP game I'm thinking about buying. |

And, well, I wasn't going to bring this up, because it's going to sound retarded, but what the hell:
Level 5 has announced a new strategy RPG for the PSP, entitled Jeanne d'Arc. The game takes place in a world inspired by the life and times of the real Jeanne d'Arc.
The story begins in the ancient past with the "War Against the Gods of Death." Evil gods commanded armies of demons and attempted to invade the human world. However, they were foiled by five chosen heroes, who created five magic bracelets and used them to seal away these gods.
???
I would think that if you were making a game about a historical figure, that you should follow the actual history as close as possible, or at least get a story in the vein of that period and location. I mean! Joan of Arc doesn't need much dressing up with death gods and magic bracelets. It's a story of a woman (supposedly led by God himself!) who starts a war to free the French people, and is successful despite everyone else failing and she having no real military training. According to the story, she dug of a holy sword at a church after a vision! This is pretty epic stuff as it is.
I'm not saying this will be a bad game (again, it's the second original PSP game that actually interests me for what will be a horrible price) but really: I wouldn't want to play a game about George Washington who has to fight his way through a random dungeon to procure the Holy Sword of Tiamat so his Minutemen can slay the God of Destruction (who may be manipulating the entire British Empire). No Japan. Bad Japan! Sit, boy, sit. Good boy. |

Yeah, this whole warping of historical fiction is indeed strange. This kind of how Trusty Bell looks to have very, very little to do with the actual life of a famous composer. Is it simply Japan taking the history of other corners of the world and giving it the "anime-zation" treatment, or is it just being used as very light inspiration for other tales? |

I'm going to assume that's a link to Brad Neely's Washington video. Being that we're so early on in the 21st century, I'd hesitate to call him the hero of the century if he wasn't so damn brilliant. |

Well, they've already made something like that, but it takes place during the reconstruction instead of during washington's time. |

Yeah, it kinda leaves the rest up to you. It's a sandbox, in a much truer sense of the word than when it's applied to GTA.
I'm not sure how it's supposed to work as an anime, though. Unless there's some kind of Haibane Renmei thing going on. |

the historical bastardizations don't really annoy me as much as how they vomit ANIME all over it. i would love to play a game about george washington collecting magic swords as long as it wasn't so goddamn cute.
sucks that a single artistic style has that much of a stranglehold over an entire genre, (and pretty much an entire country's output for the most part). |

| Stupid fucking RPG companies are making these "historical" games to coverup the fact that they're really just making the same magical fantasy evil empire little kid bullshit they've always made, only now they want to hide it so the people might think their shit is different and pay more attention to it. If this was MAGICAL FANTASY GOD KILLER RPG with a heroine named Sakura or Uzumi or some shit, no one would care, but if you call her JOAN OF ARC, someone is at least going to remember it. |

Except this is a game made by Level 5, for the PSP.
I mean, they could release FURRY FIGHTER: SCATOLOGICAL SHOOTING and it would still be a better purchase than most of the PSP games on the market. |

I think that was the point.
"Your shining armor and fine words won't get you anywhere!!"
*whistle* "I like THAT!"
