Well shnaps, guys.

http://www.bladeengine.com

There's this program out that seems to make this whole previous debackle of making visual novels pretty easy. The site has tutorials and free downloads and stuff. Let's cut it open and try messing with it a bit!

There's also Nscripter for those who want more customizablilty and power out of their visual novel engine. This Blade Engine seems like just a more user-friendly manufactured version of ONscripter basically. But you know, power for those who like to work for it. POWER ARUGUGUGUGHGHGHH.

What is Visual Novel?

Most visual Novels have multiple storylines and many endings; the gameplay mechanic in these cases typically consists of intermittent multiple-choice decision points, where the player selects a direction in which to take the game. This style of gameplay has been compared to the Choose Your Own Adventure novels. Most, however, strive for a higher level of plot and character depth than the aforementioned series of interactive children's books. These can be more closely compared to story-driven interactive fiction.

Content and Genre

There is a stereotype of: "Visual Novel = Dating Sim Game = Hentai", but that is wrong!

Visual Novels CAN be Dating Sim games, Ren'ai games, Bishoujo games, but also can be Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Adventure and Horror Fiction games, or anything your creativity comes up with :) Also, if you are creating Web Comic, Manga, or writing stories, you can easily turn them into Visual Novel.

Creating Visual Novel

Visual Novel usually consists of text window, background graphics and character graphics. In addition to those elements, music, sound and sometimes voice are added to make the VN more dramatic. It's SAVE and LOAD functions makes it easy to pause playing the Visual Novel when you want to come back later.

Producing Visual Novel is just like producing Japanese animation or Manga.
Good storyline is important, but also facial expressions of characters, their posing, the timing to use sound and screen effect are important elements to create interesting Visual Novel.
You don't need to be computer expert and have programming skill to create good Visual Novel.

I've been wanting to do one for a while, in fact, since there's been a few inspiring discussions about interactive storytelling both here and at TGQ recently.

This looks pretty interesting.
Psama/Dessgeega did you get to try it out? Is it convincing?

If you check the Nscripter link in the original post, that's open source. It's not as user friendly initially as this other program but it's a lot more flexible and powerful once you figure it out.

I'm using it to make a visual novel right now. I could give you my notes on what I could figure out with the system sometime later if you need them.

The thing with NScripter is that by using these programs here you can decompress the data and code from the games made with it, such as those available from insanis al|together. I remember toying around with the poor little bird at some point.

It doesn't have Unicode support, though, so I couldn't write anything Estonian with it. Bummer.

Yeah, it's thanks to this miracle that I was able to figure out most of the little tricks behind it. If Chazu is interested, I guess I'll have to clean it up and make it more presentable or something now!

Soon!

Hmm I am also interested in format. Is it possible to ask for (the windowed version of) one of these programs to display specific resolutions? Like the widissime 480x272 or the very vertical 256x384?Hints! Hints!

I'm not entirely sure. I think they're stuck at a 800 x something format though. 800 x 600?

I'm pretty sure Nscripter is 640 x 480 only, too.

Would someone please make for me a kinetic novel that looks like Final Fantasy Tactics? I've wanted this since like 1998 or whenever.

Just found this thread, so I'll reply to some of the posts. Let me just introduce myself... I'm PyTom, and I created Ren'Py, a Visual Novel engine supporting English, and a wide variety of other languages.

Lestrade >>> Ren'Py supports Mac OS X (10.3+) and Linux, as well as Windows 98+.

Quick Shot >>> Ren'Py supports unicode, as scripts can be written in UTF-8. Looking at samples of Estonian text, it seems like Ren'Py could support it when using the proper fonts. If not, please let me know and I'll try to fix the issues.

chazumaru >>> Ren'Py should support reasonably arbitrary resolutions in the windowed mode.

Quick Shot >>> It looks like ONscripter supports at least 800x600 mode, with the ;mode800 comment as the first line of 0.txt.

I'm glad to see more people interested in developing VNs and KNs. The hub of OEL-VN making is the Lemma Soft forums:

http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/

A number of our games are available from the Ren'Ai archives:

http://www.renai.us/

They vary in quality, but some of the new ones (Like Ori, Ochi, Onoe) are really good. (So are some of the old ones, too.)

I'll write if there are a couple artists and a programmer who want to put something together. I've had the idea of doing a virtual novel game where you are in a band, and make decisions trying to lead the band into different directions. I can compose original music for it too. www.myspace.com/cardinalgarden is some of my compositions.
