Of?

And I remember when Beyond the Beyond was a hideously huge big deal that wound up being this hideously huge big joke. I've only managed to play through about 5 hours of it. It's too tedious to even work as an MST3K experience.

Of Sonic CD, I assume.

And: no, if that's what you're asking. There was this great quote where some Sonic Team goon explained that they didn't have both soundtracks because there just wasn't room on the disc, what with all those ROMs on it -- so instead they offer a remixed version of the soundtrack that you can listen to from the menu.

...

Yes.

Yeah but I remember hearing that if you switched region settings or something you could access the japanese soundtrack.

Also, check the first post, buddy.

Aha!

...

Well, it's possible. During the Dreamcast days, Sonic Team was renowned for making all localizations available to every territory, one way or another. So. Someone who has the game can probably check this out.

Well, I have the Gamecube Gems collection.

I played through most of Sonic CD. My overall reaction was "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS BULLSHIT". It's not bad though.

I think it just has something to do with changing your system's default language, actually, and it can only be done with the PS2 version.

Let's see, I know I read about this somewhere...

Ah-hah: http://www.livejournal.com/community/sega/213445.html

Sonic CD has always been my least favorite of the series, anyway. But I may be a little odd for thinking Sonic & Knuckles is the best one.

Edit: And it looks like someone pointed out the language-switching trick earlier in this thread, which I just now actually read. So ... the long and short of it is: No, there is no way to access the original Sonic CD soundtrack in the GC collection. As far as I know.

So the other day I was talking to my brother about how annoying the 3D Sonic games could be. And he said, you know what, they shouldn't even try anymore. They should just make a Sonic racing game since those are obviously the parts they are best at or at least work in 3D.

So then I walked him over to the computer and showed him Sonic Riders. That was pretty funny.

Mario Kart DS feels like a 3D sonic game. Except slower, ironically.

I've seen people say that Jet Grind Radio, Mario Kart and Super Monkey Ball all feel like Sonic. I have to wonder what Sonic plays like in the alternate universes these people are clearly from.

I really hope that sometime during the lifespan of the Revolution we see some kind of Mario + Sonic game. Maybe get Square Enix and some ex-Square employees to make Sonic RPG: Legend of the Seven Emeralds, where Mario characters are either part of your party or maybe even the main badguys! Shit, I'd buy that even without the Mario. I just want another game like that, and I mean exactly like that, with isometrics and Shimomura and secret pseudo-Final Fantasy bosses.

Maybe some game where the two heroes (and maybe their sidekicks) change worlds. Sonic bouncing off Koopa shells like they were pinball bumpers. Mario picking up the baby animals left behind by destroyed robots and smashing them into other baddies. Get the guys behind the good parts of Sonic Adventure to work with the team that worked on Mario 64. Or even make it 2D!

Mario! Sonic! I mean, the possiblities. The Mario gang is pretty goofy but watching them stare blankly as characters like Amy and Shadow give their usual surreal dialogue would just be wonderful. Bowser and Robotnik build an airship together. Sonic teaches Mario to become Super Mario with that yellow cape of his, but it drains coins!

A Mario and Sonic co-op game, where one player plays.....oh, forget it.

Close. I must do my "Kya is actually Sonic 3D well made" thread sometime soon.

Also, I'm excited about Phantasy Star Universe.

I'm really interested in reading this when you get around to it. Cos then maybe you can tell me why I got the distinct feeling that I was finally playing a good 3D game from Sonic Team when I was playing Kya.

I thought, you know, that I was just being silly.

Kya was a nice little game, oh yes. I had it from Gamefly back-to-back with Beyond Good and Evil and, although parts of each game blur into the next, I did end up 100%ing both games "accidentally" because they drew me in so well.

If I remember correctly, Kya's sliding and grinding sections were rather slower than I would expect Sonic to be. Although making Sonic faster would just force us to space the obstacles out further to account for human reaction. A wash!

On Sonic Gems-

The GC Version apparently doesn't have the Japanese soundtrack on it. The Sonic nuts ripped it and it's just not on there. The opening apparently does have both audio tracks, though. I dunno about any remix of the original music, but the PS2 version doesn't have this. Not that I can tell, anyway.

The PS2 version /does/ have both versions of the soundtrack, though. To access it, you have to have an actual Japanese console. How it works is lt checks what language your dashboard is set to on the PS2 and chooses it that way. Japanese gets you Japanese menus, manuals, and Sonic CD music. Engish gets you the exact opposite.

By the by- Sonic the Fighters is a complete port of the game, it's not an emulation. Sonic R is a port of the PC version. They're actually pretty big. I could see maybe the GC version not having room. The PS2 image is like 3 gigs or so.

Is there any plans to release the Sonic Gems Collection for the PS2 in the US?

Because that's all I'm waiting for, really.

I hear that its a US exclusive since it did so well on the Cube. But as we all know, none of that exclusivity stuff really sticks in most cases.

I wonder how the Sonic the Fighters holds up on the PS2 version since it uses that wonky Model 2 emulator which was whipped up for Virtua FIghter 2.

Then again, as somone who's played the arcade game extensively, the Cube version seems off... can't really explain why, but it just is.

Actually, Sonic the Fighters is pretty solid. The major problems with VF2 come from poor texture positioning, and since StF is pretty much all flat polygons, it works just fine. That doesn't stop it from still being crappy, of course.

Now, the port of the original Sega Rally Championship that comes with Sega Rally 2006. That's what I want to hear about.

Are you sure? It looks like they completely ported it. Certain things are pretty high-resolution (the menus, the life bars. It uses the weird 'localization system' they set up for every other game.) I know people have found there's stuff missing in the Gems version which were in the original Rom. (The unused extra/test character Honey, for one thing.) Naka also talked about porting it in an interview, but, I generally take his interviews with a grain of salt.

It's a really bad game, though. I remember wanting to play it so bad, too, back in the day.

As for it coming out in the US, well, I have no idea. It's a GC exclusive right now, but.. it's interesting how long those things last. It came out on PS2 in Japan and Europe, though. Did Europe get the GC version?

Well, I'm running Sega Rally 1995 on my PS2 right now. It's a bit... disapointing. Just like Virtua Fighter II it's the arcade game, but there is just those annoying graphics and texture flaws you knew aren't there.

Yeah, I read a whole thread on Gaming Age that went over all the problems. Plus they say Sega Rally 2006 as a whole is pretty bad.
