I just "finished" Introversion's Uplink and came across a truly full mod project called Onlink. I became very excited after reading the features listed in the project tab on that site, so I joined the forums and started offering ideas and help. Have you ever felt about a project like this that you want it to go THIS far and you suspect that it may only ever go this far? What do you feel are the rules for curbing your enthusiasm and ensuring that you neither step on the toes of those responsible nor seem rude in your demands? What can you do to help besides, well, offer to help?

they already have a vision. they're going to do it. you can try to make their vision as close to yours as you want, but it'll never be your vision. you have to convince them that their vision sucks and that yours is much different and better. it's like convincing a girl with a boyfriend to have sex with you. like that.

There really is no polite way to make gameplay suggestions to a team that already knows what it wants to do. Ultimately, you will just come off as another eGenius who has more ideas than skills, or as someone who just wants to dip his hand in and manipulate the project without making a real contribution.

Your best bet is to somehow "establish" yourself as a cool and knowledgable guy with regards to gameplay mechanics, but do it in such a way that they come to you for the suggestions. The moment you randomly step up to the plate and offer your brilliant suggestions is the moment that you become yet another internet denizen who suggests some feature that has probably already been suggested and rejected a million times; they'll just ignore you.

I don't know if this will help, but does this project have a design document? If this project doesn't have a design doc, RUN.

Conversely, can you take your idea and turn it into a design doc?
If you can do that it helps when trying to get people to go with your idea.
