Man, my wife is way too into the elections and is spending all day talking about the various voter frauds taking place over the course of the day, the majority of which seem to be GOP-based attempts to keep minorities from voting.

Oh god, she's turned on the news channels. I might go into work after all.

i kind of like preferential balloting myself. it would make behind the scenes fraud more complicated, at least.

Here's some examples of voter fraud going on today.

The FBI is invistigating complaints that the Republicans in Virginia have been trying to misdirect or confuse people about election day.

Republicans are using robo calls to call people non-stop. The messages announce they want to give the callee information on the Democrat, misleading people into thinking that the Democrats are pestering them into voting. But as the message goes on, it becomes clear to most non-stupid people that its a message against the Democrat, and the call only identifies its (Republican) source at the end of the message, which is a violation of the law.

A poll worker assaulted a voter. Don't know what party affiliation was sorely represented by this.

Conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham told her voters to prank call the fraud hot-line set up by the DNC. I hope she gets sued off the fucking air or thrown in jail.

There's probably a lot more shit than that that's happened. I'm sure will find out about more misdeeds after FOX officially announces that the Democrats have lost tonight and proclaim the 2006 election to be ancient history only nut-cases are still focusing on.

EDIT - I guess to some of you, I'm out of line and fringe just for posting this stuff now, today, during an election. Sorry!

Dhex, while both parties may have a wonderful history of voter fraud if you look over the entire history of the country, so far today only Republicans are engaging in this grand tradition. The only kind of shit the Democrats will be called on today is wonky-retarded nonsense thought up by pajama bloggers. You know the kind of scandals I'm talking about, some official will accidentally put a piece of paper in the wrong envelope or file something an hour late or something and then Matt Drudge will link to it and go "OMG DEMOCRATS ARE JUST AS BAD WHY ISN'T THE MEDIA REPORTING THIS CLEARLY EARTH SHATTERING STORY WHAT A BUNCH OF BIASED LIBERAL BASTARDS."

Thank you. Quoted for the public good. Why would you assume the assaultive poll worker was trying to defraud the voter?

Drudge Report has the better version. I'd say that's pretty interesting.

Actually, I didn't in writing (*phew*) though I thought it. I was hoping it wouldn't be a Democrat poll worker because that would've made me feel like shit. Even better to know it wasn't over a partisan issue at all.

yeah, me and my friend from ohio went to wait in the US embassy in tokyo last year to try to vote for the antibush (forgot his name now) and they told us they were out of absentee ballots, which would have to be sent by snail mail anyway, which would take two to four weeks

i told the girl there to put some fucking mustard on it and get it there in five days -- i can send a contract to a freelancer in a brown envelope with a stamp on it and they get it in three days

she said that wasn't an option, and if there's the slightest chance that the ballot won't make it in time, there's no point in voting

i said, "get them on the telephone; tell them a guy (one (1) guy) from indiana and a guy (one (1) guy) from ohio are voting for notbush?"

she said, sir, we can't do that, there's no infrastructure laid out for that sort of thing

on the way out we flipped off the door because flipping off the embassy staff could be perceived as an act of terrorism and flipping off the american flag could be perceived as an act of vandalism

See, Joestar, one of my underlying hypotheses is this: if you rate humanity and yourself so lowly, then you must have some sort of metric or standard by which to measure "worth." Subconsciously though, I think you rate yourself very highly. Then again, maybe you're just in denial about doing it consciously.

Back on the more interesting and intended topic of the thread: I've probably mentioned it before but my goddamn 2004 absentee ballot got returned because I evidently didn't pay enough stupid postage on that massive fucking absentee ballot envelope.

Wouldn't that go against the whole being-afraid-of-people-and-attention thing?

Mr. Business, I kinda do rate people on a scale, sorta? Though in all honesty, I consider myself average at best, and a complete piece of crap at worst.

There is a person that I do compare everyone to, to judge their worth, but it is definitely not me.

Re: Legato. James and I have similar views on politics, so I doubt we'd yell at each other in this thread. Sorry!

Vinny! I wish I saw this shit earlier. You should have casted your provisional ballot and then took steps to ensure it was counted. At the very least, if you were told you were not registered in the district in which you voted, you should've went to the district they told you to. Election officials CANNOT stop you from voting if you show up. Especially if you have an ID. I hope you've reported this incident to the various watchdog agencies that have cropped up of late. Voting is important, and no matter how much fuckstick politicians try to stop people from doing it, there is always a way.

They're kids. They're learning how to be responsible; how to have self control. The act of getting pregnant is already probably traumatizing them, and the abortion itself is probably going to scar them. Should they talk to their parents? Maybe. It depends on the relationship, and the maturity of both parties. I'm pretty sure those are things the government has no fucking business attempting to assume.

And that's the rub. These kinds of laws don't exist to help the kid or the parent. They exist to promote the agenda of people that aren't remotely tied to the situation at hand. People removed from reality. And you know what most of them do if they find out their daughter is pregnant? They either disown her, or force her to have an abortion (even though they hate abortions and think they shouldn't exist!) and completely destroy the relationship between them and their kid for the next decade. The people that want this law to exist are the reason it shouldn't.

WIN.

I'm always dismayed to see teens harangued as "stupid" or "idiots" for the mistakes they make. Most people use those names don't work with kids, and it shows. It's the same attitude that makes many parents distant to their kids' struggles. They've forgotten what it's like to be naïve, idealistic, and suddenly burdened with physical impulses that nothing in their experience has prepared them to handle.

"Lack of self control?" I doubt anyone was the pinnacle of Victorian restraint when he learned how to touch himself at night.

We need more Thomas Hardy i t t. Life's hard, 'specially when you're new at it.

I suddenly realized that voting is a stab against cynicism.

Even better, I'd like to know when it will start running in the Republican primaries. (zing?)

On topic: In South Carolina, we voted on gay marriage and some other less dramatic measures involving how the local legislative bodies operate. It was pretty keen. They had the legalese underscored by a direct statement titled "What This Means." Unfortunately, I hadn't been aware of those direct statements until I was actually IN the poll booth, and I was informed that I had about three minutes to vote, so I made choices based on what seemed more or less sensible at the time.

Still, I'm aware that laws that are useful to special interests frequently take the appearance of boring work-a-day stuff. So I'm looking into it after the fact.

Y'know, I'm living in Texas, and I'm a young college kid, but I just don't think that I much care for Kinky Friedman's platform. I mean, the guy is talking about privatizing school sports, and I assume that means K-12 sports. That notion both makes sense to me, and also bothers the hell out of me.

On the one hand, sports teams are a money sink and a waste of time.

On the other hand, if the kids are trying to "play their best" to "get the sponsorships" then you've basically got kids who are playing to get DA BIG BUX, or some shit like that. K-12 ought to be about education, not winning sponsorships. It's one thing if it's pro-athletics, but making a spectacle and a business enterprise out of high-school football seems twisted.

Maybe my understand of this is all wrong though.

Bell also said there was a big chance for him to win, and it made me think that maybe all of the pissed off Democrats would get together and vote for him instead of Kinky or the Strayhorn, and he'd get the most votes of all the non-Perry voters.

Well, lucky me, I was right. Unfortunately 30% isn't enough to stop Perry's 39%. Fuck.

The news is saying the Democrats will control the house. That's cool, I really like Nancy Pelosi. The only non-fiction book I've ever read that was penned by someone I could tell was a pretty big conservative was about the threat posed by China in the coming years and decades. The guy hated Clinton for all the consessions he'd given China, but it seemed like he was much more ambivelent towards Pelosi. Also, I like that snicker she has in that clip they show of her on the Colbert Report. Sexy. I'd like to make love to her and make her have my abortion without telling her parents. Naughty girl.

The Democrats need three Senate seats to win, so goes the TV banter. Harold Ford looks like he will lose, which saddens me greatly. My girlfriend is from Tennessee and was really excited about Ford. The Virginia race looks close though. Probably best to go to sleep since none of the talking heads will know shit until tommorow.
