I think.

When I turn the brightness on my HDTV up really high on a black screen, so that the black turns gray, in the lower right area of the screen, there is a spot markedly darker than the rest of the screen. It looks almost like a perfectly round fingerprint. Squatting in front of the TV and getting eye-to-eye with it reveals that the dead center of the spot is black. The area around it is gray. Being that my TV is 1080p and some serious crazy shit, pixels in and of themselves are pretty tiny.

When the brightness is turned up to about 55 (out of 100), also, little flickering spots are visible all over dark areas. You have to be very close to the television to see them, and maybe be squinting a little bit. Unless the brightness is way up, at which point it's totally obvious.

Are either of these problems worth sending the TV back to Sony for service? It would take like two weeks for the fuckers to fix it. Two weeks without my HDTV. (Would be nice to have a Macbook Pro in the meantime, yeah.)

Also!! When using the Xbox 360 in 1080p through component, there are weird static green diagonal lines through the screen whenever it fades to black. I noticed these during the (too many) loading scenes in the Lost Odyssey demo disc. Though it turned out the demo was actually not 1080p-compatible, which makes sense. However, the cut to black before the dashboard was also plagued by the green lines.

Gears of War is 1080p, yes? I seriously hope that there are no green lines on some native 1080p content, because I want to enjoy the game to the fullest extent of my television.

The PlayStation 3 here in the office is hooked up to the exact model of Bravia I have at home, and the 1080p works fine. It, too, has flickering gray spots when the brightness is turned up on a black screen, though there aren't NEARLY as many as on mine. Maybe I should post a photo.

That fucking dead pixel, though. Fuck that dead pixel. When did it die? I wasn't even invited to its funeral. I shit on its grave, in a cemetary where 2,073,599 more graves are dug and waiting.

Shit.

Well, whenever something like this happens to me, I find that the only thing that makes me feel better is throwing some Fabergé eggs at poor people. Out of the window of my diamond-studded rocket Hummer.

Goodbye, dead pixel. We hardly knew ye.

A few words about the dead pixel: He was a priest, he was a rebel, he was the nexus one. He was a liar, he was a beggar, and he loved the setting sun.

Thank you. Plz friend me on MySpace.

I have one in my Macbook Pro, Tim, so you'd better watch out. I don't know if the Merom 2 business takes CARE of that or not.

I find that it does not annoy me. Sometimes I like to play around with it, moving the windows around and watching the pixel "stay in place."

I don't know the exact model you have, but this place is loaded with armchair experts:

For the 1080p thing, if you're hooked up via component, not all TVs have proper support for that, which would explain the green lines. You won't have the same problem via HDMI. For the dead pixel, it's really up to you how much it bothers you to be worth waiting for it to be serviced.

Yeah, I don't know the exact details, but Component Cables have image degration with higher resolutions. VGA cables are a bit better, but neither can handle 1080p without quality loss.

I recommend that you get a VGA cable for you 360 and that should clear up most of the problems.

That's not exactly true, really. It's just that VGA and component are analog, so. That's all!

Didn't your TV have the same weird green shit, shaper?

I have a single dead pixel each in my LCD monitor and my Iwata-signed DS. If my Macbook Pro busts one out at any point in the future Cupertino will be destroyed.

Eh, no. It's not.

Shame the pixel's not stuck. That can be helped. Dead? Not so much. It's not worth service though, if you need to fiddle with the settings to even see it.

Well!! I guess I can enjoy GoW in 720p, then!!

So wait, explain to me the difference between a dead pixel and a stuck pixel. Maybe the pixel is stuck?

And seeing as I paid like $2000 for this TV, I'm a tiny bit reluctant to let it have any flaws. So, um . . . hmmm.

Also, yeah, maybe my TV doesn't have support for 1080p via component. Motherfuckers. Microsoft should hook up the 360 with an HDMI cable. Hell.

Dead pixel usually refers to a pixel that's stuck on the black (off) setting.

Stuck pixel means a pixel jammed on one particular color, like, white or green or red or whatever.

Stuck pixels can be fixed by having them switch colors really rapidly a lot for a long time, occasionally. Dead pixels are just dead. Supposedly light massaging can work, but I have my doubts!

Yeah, though getting VGA cables cleared that up. My TV doesn't get along well with component cables for some reason.

I guess it depends on what type of TV you have. According to this using a VGA cable can cause all kinds of screen tearing etc. (on all resolutions, not just 1080p), but mostly it's the only way for 1080p on the 360. For now.
