| I'll step up to say that at some point after you play one of these Zeldas you've listed, you should give The Minnish Cap a shot. It's short, it's sweet and it's got a real damn cool boss battle. |

What do I play it with? All I see is something called an SMC file and I don't know what that is. Also it's only a meg big, are you sure it's the whole thing?
Zelda Classic you big dummy.
Oh. I see. I'm on it.
Okay I downloaded ZC now can someone tell me the image is cropped off and the bottom half of the screen is black when I try to run it. |

Hey, there you go, Baines. This is an awesome deal, the disc also has a retrospective video on it with footage from all the games up to Wind Waker. It's pretty nifty.
I have the Collector's Edition, which I got free with the Nintendo Power subscription I mentioned. Though now I do recall it was available in at least one other way, as the NP method was a catch-all for anyone else that wanted it.
The Collector's Edition has Majora's Mask though, not Master Quest.
Checking the box though, it does have a Wind Waker demo. I think I got mine after I got Wind Waker though...
Master Quest was on the other OoT collection, which I think was offered before the Collector's Edition described above? |

Zelda: Wand of gamelon and Link: Faces of Evil, both on CD-i.
I honestly enjoyed them a helluva lot more than Zelda II on the NES. Seriously, the first two Zelda CD-i games are not that bad - I liked them a great deal. Design wise, they're very clever, and have an almost Metroidvania style of pacing, in that item acquisitions allow further progress. The only downside are the cinemas, which in truth are terrible. But yeah, the games themselves, were awesome, if you ignore the fact they're not by Nintendo.
By another name, they would have been hailed as classics. |

Yeah, I typed MQ in my abbreviations but I meant MM. The Master Quest disc was a pre-order bonus for Wind Waker. I'm actually sad that Nintendo didn't do some sort of "pre-order Twilight Princess and get something totally sweet!" |

I like Zelda 2 because everything was grittier and mean compared to the last one. Where everything there was super deformed.
My favorite battles are those guardian knight battles in the Temples. Bloody intense! Never has proper shield use been more imporant to my progress in any Zelda game outside of this one. |

Funny thing, this thread, as I am currently playing through both Ocarina of Time and Zelda 1 for the first time. The only previous Zelda experience I have is A Link To The Past, which I didn't like too much (looking back, I see that maybe it struck an uneven balance between the more arcadey 'kill kill kill' of Zelda 1 and the puzzles of OoT, for me.) I'm playing through both these games because when I'm not home or don't have a lot of time to play OoT, I just play Zelda 1 for a few minutes on my Micro.
OoT has aged pretty well, in my opinion! The graphics are beautiful, the gameplay is solid. Zelda 1, on the other hand, is a rough game by today's standards, but it's still very rewarding when you overcome its many obstacles.
So, speaking of OoT, I just beat the Water Temple, and it was fun. It wasn't a low point in the game, for me, though maybe that is because my frustration was reduced by the occasional tip from a friend. The water mechanic sort of reminds me of that one stage in Super Mario 64. And yeah, that miniboss battle was awesome, mostly because of the room. The boss was an impressive one, too. |

Actually I haven't either. The first time I played it I was playing a friend's copy and he was constantly bugging me that I was playing the game wrong. The second time I tried I had played OoT and LA and had come to the conclusion that LttP is pretty and all but it isn't exactly fun. Also Ganon's tower never freaking ends. |

$5 off the purchase of a Zelda game through the Wii Virtual Store?
Anything they could offer is something they could now charge money for through the Virtual Store. |

So dungeon # 7 in the original Zelda is just plain kicking my ass. I've got the red candle or whatever it is you get from that dungeon, but I've run out of keys and bombs, and so haven't been able to reach the room with the boss. I'm still having a pretty good time with it though, using maps and stuff off GameFAQs. I'll probably play the Second Quest as well, just because I've never played it before and it'll be a new experience.
I've also started a new game of Link to the Past, GBA version. I've only ever gotten as far as the part where you can first start entering and exiting the dark world or whatever, and never beyond that point. There's always been something about it that just didn't gel with me, though I don't know what. Maybe it's the general feel of the game, the sort of floatiness or bounciness to it. Whatever it is I'm not feeling it as much now, and I really enjoy the bounciness to the combat and the animation. I don't know if I'll beat this one though.
Playing LttP just makes me want to play Link's Awakening though, because they're both pretty similar in terms of design and feel. I might do that soon, and while I'm at it squeeze in the time to play through Adventure of Link. AoL will be the real challenge though, because the game itself is so damn hard and not very easy to get into.
But yeah, I haven't played Gears of War in like a week because I've just been playing these old Zelda games. Twilight Princess for GameCube comes out in exactly four weeks, and I'd like to have as many of these older 2D games beaten and played so I can sort of compare them all with each other, despite TP basically being the same game as Ocarina of Time. Mostly I just want to answer for myself the question of what makes a Zelda game. |

Mr. Mechanical, a tip for you: Zelda Classic won't run a SNES ROM, 'cause it's not, y'know, an SNES emulator. ZSNES and Snes9x are Zelda emulators. Otherwise, Zelda CLassic is pretty badass.

You ran out of keys on the 7th dungeon? The game gives you more keys than you actually need, if you actually clear most of the dungeon rooms. Using GameFAQs maps might mean you aren't doing that? Plus you can just buy more keys. By that point, you should only be using money for arrows and maybe a red potion anyway.
Bombs are a different matter, particularly if you are running without maps and are trying to bomb nearly every wall you find. |

Yeah, I was aware. I've got all that worked out now. Thanks. Zelda Classic won't run in full screen for me, but it does work just dandy in windowed mode.

Yeah, I had skipped grabbing extra keys in a couple of dungeons earlier because I already had so many at the time. I just grabbed the three or so in dungeon 7 earlier and got back on track just fine. I've only ever spent money on potions, and the 250 ruppees required for the blue ring.
And hey, did you know you don't need to buy arrows except for only once? Because after that ruppees double as ammo for the bow, sort of. Meaning that for every arrow you fire your ruppee amount goes down by one. One per arrow. I thought that was pretty neat.
So yeah, just beat the first quest. This marks the second time I've ever beat the game. I've started the second quest up though. It's hard! Thankfully the power bracelet was in the same spot though. |

Super Secret 64: In addition to the First and Second Quests, Zelda Classic also comes with a fan-made Third Quest, which is available after you beat Second.
(Or, when you name a save file after the quest's author.) "ALPHA."
ICGC: ZC Third Quest, methinks? |
