This thing costs £410 at launch.

By the time I graduate (18 months) hardware value will have improved, deals will be available, and whatnot.

It has a beautiful arcade stick.

It runs linux.

Like, with no DRM.

It runs emulators and applications and pretty much anything linux does.

For £410, plus a ton of expensive extra shit I don't have to pay for.

It's still going to tank, but I want a PS3 bad. This is the best goddamn news for home emulation/entertainment computing. And I'll get to make a loss for Sony to boot!

Yeah!

By the time I'm in a lifesyle place where I can justify the spending, my XP box will be nearing seven years service - the PS3 is an ideal interim solution in that case. Hopefully the emulation scene will really pick up on it.

It's a pretty good idea to have a nice TV as well.

Also, the heaped-up selection of legal ROMz is probably not going to be too bad in a few years' time, either. Just a hunch.

shit, i just deleted endlesschris's post by accident!

edit: in said post he accused me of being a hack and asked me how much i was getting paid to mention that the PS3 supports external HDD via USB 2.0 and rips songs to MP3s which can then be transported to external HDDs and/or portable media devices and/or other computers

all things which are actually facts

and actually facts i didn't know anything about until i waited in line to buy a playstation 3 and then got it home and discovered in my own living room

Along these lines: How easy is it to swap out the hard drive? And what's Sony's stance on it?

there will be accompanying insertcredit videos

when, uh, i bother to put them up

i just figured it wasn't "newsworthy" when all was said and done -- we didn't get any video of th emad and crazy psychotic chinese people going nuts and punching one another because i didn't want to stand near them (and lose my place in line)

if SOMEONE would have gotten me a PS3 BEFORE THE LAUNCH in other words if they were sending them to PEOPLE WHO HAD POLITELY PAID FOR THEM instead of fucking videogame journalists / bloggers, i wouldn't have had to wait in line! i could have filmed those neck-punching chinese fuckers all morning long

also, here is a preview of the IC launch coverage:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKrY59OsaeM

. . . maybe we'll just wait and put it and the wii launch coverage up at the same time

It comes with Linux on it, or at least it was going to. Wikipedia says otherwise, but that there's a software download for it. Something about networking, if I remember correctly, was its purpose.

One of the problems I have encountered using Linux has been trying to, say, download from the internet onboard-lan drivers so that I can connect to my network. Using a installation designed for a specific set of hardware would be somewhat enjoyable.

why was there more excitement when the PSP was launched then there was this entire weekend?

maybe I haven't been reading enough "blogs" and/or everyone is busy playing their new systems or something but still.. I feel something is lacking.

You could build a decent linux box cheaper than that and with it being i386 you wouldn't have any issues with obtaining software, which you might with the ps3 and all this cell nonsense?

My want for a ps3 is far more base.. Virtua Fighter 5!

They had a giant PS3 truck outside best buy this weekend, PS3 taunts me and teases me and then pushes me aside. I'm gonna have to wait, but my want is still there.

Tim if this is true, this is a most awesome development.

There's no such thing as 320kbps VBR, you mean CBR. VBR does not stay at a constant 320kbps!

It does if you're ripping the right music!

And I mean. "VBR with a maximum bitrate of 320 kbps" as opposed to a maximum of 256.

Really figured I wouldn't have to spell that out, yeah!

Is "The Want" anything like the new "The Suffering"? Because I know a guy who developed that for the PS3 and maybe you're on the same team.

Thanks, I'll be here all week, tip your waitresses, try the veal, yadda yadda yadda.

I just developed a want for the PS3 108.
I think this new avatar appeals to the old, lesbian me, as well as the new straighter version.

I won't want a PS3 till I can afford an HDTV. And that'll happen ... never.

Did your sexuality get retconned when a more respected writer like Joss Whedon or Grant Morrison took over scripting your life to help boost flagging sales?

I kept meaning to post that I've never thought the Japanese girls in Tim's avatars were attractive, and that this one is the worst of all, but I thought that would've just been mean.

Since when is Joss Whedon a respected writer?

Lasting only a season, Serenity didn't have the time to be ran into the ground.

And we've little idea whether the final movie or Whedon's post-release version would have been better. (After release, Whedon decided he'd wished he'd written parts differently.)

I'm pumping the gorgeous iron every morning over here!! Sooner or later, I'll defeat anyone. I have the lesbians and straight girls on my side; now all I need are the fairy boys. I need to be unisexually appealing if my plan is to succeed.

Also in need of some skincare product recommendations. I basically want to look like this avatar (an accidental occasion of perfect skin condition) at all times of the day.

Still thinking about lasering the beard.

If you can get ahold of Proactive over in Japan, Tim, it works like a charm.

I mean, you'll FEEL the difference as soon as you use it the first time, and you'll see a difference the very next day. A week of this stuff and your skin is freakin' beautiful.

I think I'll look up this "proactive." We're experiencing slightly chilly weather here (at least relative to Texas) and my skin feels like flaky shit. Everything is just so cracked my head feels like a melon, or some other uncomfortable weight on my shoulders.

No...

It totally depends on your skin...

If you have bad skin because you're a lazy fuck, and you dont go outside or eat enough fruit, then it might help...

But if you have some sort of Acne issue, it does fuck all!

I'm a big fan of Acutane. It produced magical, permanent results where all other acne medications failed, and made me obscenely sexy just in time to finish high school (bad timing).

Fortunately, since the results were permanent, I'm still mostly obscenely sexy, just kind of also fat.

It's by prescription only, so you'll probably have to find an American doctor to prescribe it for you. I've heard that when you ask Japanese doctors for prescriptions they tend to just prescribe you mysterious green powders instead and refuse to tell you what they are.

Don't get preggers while you're on it though, Tim, because it makes flipper babies.
