So I know I started a thread about preordering PS3's but I'm curious as to who actually has one. Post here or not!

guys i just read an article that called the external HD-DVD player a positive because when it wore out you could just toss it and get another but with the ps3 you could not do that how do you feel about this because i feel that this is a relatively compelling argument at least until you consider the whole games and stuff that aren't movies on HD-DVDs because that does seem to put the 360 in rather a tight spot much like the live arcade games having to stay below 50 megs to supports the memory card users

Yeah, and it doesn't make much sense in Costco's case since they usually charge an extra 5% on the total price online if you're not a member.

Now if you are a member, they have a policy where you can get a full refund of the membership fee should you end up being disatisfied. Thus, I was all "gwuh?" and so forth when they explained it to me.

The difference is big if I plan on reselling it on ebay. I'm not sure what I plan on doing with it yet so I'm going to try swapping it for the 60GB and probably selling it near Christmas if the prices break $2000 again.

I completely agree with you. There is a tremendous difference between the premium and core 360, not much of a difference between the 20GB and 60GB PS3.

PS3s are already under $1,000 on ebay. Prices are dropping fast, ebay is flooded with them. For every one that sells there seem to be 10 where a $900 bid didn't meed reserve or it had no bids with a $2000 buy it now.

The smart money would be to hold off posting the system for sale until the last week before Christmas, when those who'd rather die peniless than suffer the throes of a disgrunted child on Christmas morn will be extra-motivated to spend.

Oh and by the way, I seem to recall SuperWes being dead on about this pre-launch. I agreed with him. There were simply too many people who thought getting a PS3 was a guaranteed instant $2000+ profit. The only thing that pisses me off isn't that "real gamers" aren't getting to play consoles, it's that Ebay and Paypal are taking a percentage of all of these sales and making a killing. Yuck.

So yeah, I sort of tried to get a PS3. I guess spending $800 on a system, tax, and a few games made me not terribly excited about rushing out and throwing down the cash. Went to some VERY out of the way Wal-Marts, and I missed out by about two hours.

I'll get a 60GB unit when I see one in Best Buy. Mainly because I'll get some money back through their Rewards card certificates after spending all that, and they have a good extended warranty. If I get it in December or I don't get it until March, not that huge a deal. I'll pay attention, but I'm not going to die if I have to be content finishing everything in Ridge Racer 6 instead of playing RR7 for the next couple months.

I'll be a lot more interested once Lair and Motor Storm are out, and it will be fucking unbearable if Virtua Fighter 5 is released and I don't yet have a PS3. Gonna try to not let that happen.

firenze I agree with most of your statement, except replace FFXII with ridge racer 6 and we'll be right in line.

So the moral of the story is ebayers don't be dicks, either play it or don't get one.

I have 500.00 in birthday certificates I consider putting towards a PS3 when they are plentiful...like you I'll keep an eye out but not sweat it.

I completely don't care. I love Ridge Racer. Even if most tracks are repeats, RR7 features several new tracks, better online options, an interesting new slipstream mechanic, car modification, somewhat enhanced graphics, and some new music. That's plenty for me. Also know that RR6 is my favorite game of the past year, so even an "upgrade" version of the same game would be appealing to me. Not that I really think RR7 is "almost identical" anyway - there are enough changes for me. There are people who think Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Street Fighter Alpha 3 are "almost identical" too, but no hardcore 2D fighter fan would agree.

To understand more of where I'm coming from... I adore Ridge Racers 2 on PSP, and it's a complete rehash. All of the courses are from previous RR games (even the music is), they're just playable in the "Ridge Racers" gameplay system (nitrous) and graphical style.

Seeing as how I already have RR6, maybe RR7 isn't a "must buy within a month of launch no matter the cost" system seller for me by itself. But it's damn sure a must purchase game for me when I eventually get a PS3. It takes its place among several system exclusives that I really want, and that's plenty of reason to buy a PS3 in my eyes. I'll just wait until I can walk into a retail store and buy one, and when I get that opportunity I'll take it. Oh, and VF5 or FFXIII would convince me to buy the system even if there were zero other games I wanted at all. So I'll be getting a PS3 no matter what. Lair, Motor Storm, Heavenly Sword, MGS4, Tekken 6, DMC4, Monster Kingdom - all essentially icing on the cake, and that's icing that sounds mighty tasty to me.

Not terribly relevant to me. I want RR7 no matter what. At the very least there is a new slipstream mechanic and a handful of nice looking new courses. That's plenty for me. It's not a world of difference in graphics between RR6 and RR7 anyway, both look very nice to me. Graphics aren't the deciding factor here.

I also love RR6, despite the constant criticism it got at the 360 launch. I even heard quite a few people putting it among the worst 360 launch games. I think that's positively insane. It's my favorite video game on any system released in the past year, and I don't need reviews or image comparisons to tell me that. The combination of RR6, DOA4, and having $400 in Best Buy gift cards is what convinced me to get a 360 in the first place. I'm satisfied with my decision.

It's not a system-favoritism thing, I already own the main competition (360) and I'll eventually get a Wii once there are any system exclusive games that appeal to me. If Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken 6, and Final Fantasy XIII were only coming to 360, I'd be excited about them on that system just as much as I am about them on PS3. But they aren't, so I'm willing to buy a PS3 to play them.

Well look it's just Ridge Racer 7, perhaps more than any other sequel, is the most clearly schlocked-together rehash ever made. It's really a rehash of a rehash, given that Ridge Racer 6 was really just a schlocked-together rehash or Ridge Racers.

I say this as someone who really likes Ridger Racer 6, too. It's just, you know. Give me a fucking break, Namco, and all that.

Even if that's true, and arguably it is, I understand the motivation. The majority of the RR fanbase is in Japan. A nation that pretty much ignored the 360. So it's new to most of the RR fanbase and it prevents them from getting too pissed at Namco for making them miss out on a RR game just because they didn't buy an expensive console that most Japanese gamers don't want.

I'd argue that it's got some enhancements too though. The slipstream mechanic in particular is major. The online play sounds significantly improved. The car modification is certainly new. I don't really have a problem with calling it Ridge Racer 6.5. Either way, I still want it. If we got this same sort of Ridge Racer 6: Champion Edition on 360, I'd certainly re-buy the enhanced game on that system too.

Oh, and Ridge Racers 2 on PSP is much more of a rehash than RR7. But it's a portable rehash packed full of R4 tracks and music, so I don't complain too much.

See my earlier comment about being a miserable little man. :(

I mean more power to you, and all that. I just can't imagine being so slavishly devoted to a series that you buy even the most obvious watered down retreads without a second thought, and are grateful for the privelege.

You do? Why? Sorry, it just seems kind of bizarre to me.

RR6 is a really horrible mess of a game. I mean, really, there are, like, four actual environments, all of which vary greatly in graphical quality and not much at all in color pallette, and you drive ugly, fake cars that take up half the screen through them over and over again until the game tells you you got something done. I have no remorse for these statements because whoever put this game together really didn't care about it at all. It's a disaster.

I mean, I like it, anyway. I like it because I can play music I like while driving abitrarily through these what-could-have-been environments.

I think I like the announcer the most though. Every once in a while, he'll say quietly, under his breath, almost by accident, "You've got some smooth moves..." You can almost feel his shame for saying something so sincere, like he had to run out of the room and think about how he'll ever be able to talk to you again.
