As you can see from the news page, Nippon Ichi is again tempting you to the Altar of the Pixel with their newest game, Grim Grimoire. Made by Princess Crown doods? That's as high a recommendation you can pretty much get these days, without having Treasure or a revived Gunpei Yokoi involved. Shaper says he STILL can't "let the dogs out" on Odin Sphere, the pseudosequel to Princess Crown just yet, but all you need to know is that it's what 2D gaming was supposed to be like before 3D gaming happened and you get the idea.
Offer your soul to Nippon Ichi! Those who hold Lord Zetta in their hearts will be spared the wrath of a level 4000 Baal during the Statocalypse, when experience points will flood the world and no decimeter of terrain will be safe from area of effect attacks. |

Yeah, I admit that me starting a thread that doesn't mention Phantom Brave makes the thread feel kinda empty. I wanted to give it a shot, though.
Nippon Ichi doesn't just make/publish SRPGs, you know. But while SRPGs are niche, their other titles are niche-niche, like maybe five people in the world asked for that kind of game to be made. "Intense cyberpunk Starcraft/Syndicate clone style RPG" and "murder mystery game for the PC that isn't actually an excuse to rape a clearly underage girl for vague supernatural necessities" might be good games, but they're also experimental games. Experimental, in that "I don't think anyone is going to buy this, ever."
But the Princess Crown type dealie is huge for sprite lovers. Just look at some of them videos on that Youtube. If you had asked me to describe what 32 bit gaming would be like, it would look something a lot like that. And that's what was possible on the Sega Saturn.
